Why isn't "mouthe" a word?
We have "breath" and "breathe" -- why not "mouth" and "mouthe"?
These are the important questions I ponder while I edit.
@KPED @edibuddies To be fair, it is a word (a verb at that) but it just happens not to be spelt that way, much as lead isn't leade.
Why that is is a mystery. Was there once a superstition against hexagraphs? Did a scribe run out of ink? Or did a dictionarist once make a blunder and, ever since, generations of editors have meekly complied for fear of being bad-mouthed?
