#Toronto is soon starting construction of *another* Dutch-style mixed-use protected traffic intersection! Great news for any #BikeTooter or #Walker in the city, and great for drivers too. BlogTO, CTV, and others are reporting this as the first but Toronto has actually completed construction of a similarly protected intersection near York University, as this video from Beyond the Automobile reminded me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI-Po6TkDps
More information on the features and benefits of protected intersections is available in this video from Angry Architect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXJIZ5xLzaM
I think it's important to mention that the clarity that such intersections bring to mixed-traffic environments is beneficial for drivers as well. The visibility improvements can lower stress when making turns across mixed traffic. More trips by bike also means fewer other cars in your way.
The satellite view of the #YorkUniversity intersection at Murray Ross Pkwy and Evelyn Wiggins Dr hasn't been updated yet, but you can see the protected bidirectional bike lanes are extended into the intersection. This was completed last year and looks lovely. Hopefully it's been lively this summer as well.
