Mastodon desperately needs an io.js type fork to happen. Something that removes Gargron from the critical path, and rapidly adds much requested features to Mastodon, with the ultimate goal of being merged back into Mastodon and Gargron agreeing to change how the project is managed.
That or maybe we should start putting our eggs in another basket (GoToSocial sure looks interesting).
For those not in the know io.js was a fork of Node.js, the folks who did the fork were upset with the governance of Node.js, and how slow it was moving. They quickly added a bunch of useful features and moved the project forward, so much so that it forced the Node.js project to change. io.js was eventually merged back into Node.js and abandoned.
That's a very terse history, it's definitely more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it.
