Wow, thanks everyone for such a warm welcome! Any questions, please ask.

And don't be afraid to create an account and start posting videos! All you need is your phone's camera. That cool new in your city? That crosswalk on that ? Start small and experiment 🙂

@video How do you plan to manage storage costs since videos take a fair bit of storage and bandwidth to host and serve? As videos age, views for many will trend towards zero while the cost to store them remains constant.

@markstos Great question! Storage is via : costs are $15/tb/mo. Bandwidth is essentially free (just per-object read operations at $0.36 / million requests).

We're currently setting up @opencollective for completely transparent expenses and budgeting (opencollective.com/uv).

@video @opencollective That’s pretty cheap, it’s just that Big Tech has made infinitely long storage the standard model and at some point the model isn’t sustainable unless there is some deletion/expiration process to balance the uploads.

Strava recently raised their prices, but of course they have to because they started storing an unbounded amount of photos and videos.

It’s a hard problem. People don’t want to lose their media, either.

@markstos @opencollective It’s a valid concern! is cheap, but it’s by no means the only option out there. It’s also commoditized (s3) so providers can be easily switched. We also think by keeping a focused library of public content, storage costs can be more than sustainable!

Data durability is also very important, which is why we maintain backups, are joining the Open Collective Foundation, and operated as a collective of urbanism-related creators! (Check out our Matrix for more on that)
