John Quiggin recently wrote in The Guardian:
“Breaking with the US will be painful in all sorts of ways. But the break is coming whether we like it or not. Rather than pretending that the return of US democracy is just around the corner, we should welcome the opportunities of becoming a full participant in the most dynamic region in the global economy.”

In the closing paragraph quoted above #Quiggin narrows it down to an opportunity and it surely is. But this is not the first time Australia has had the opportunity to show its mettle and chart a foreign policy course which takes it away from the comforting far-away shores of distant allies. From 1942 onwards, Australia showed the world it was punching above its weight and as the war ended and the retreat of empires from our area of interest occurred with alarming rapidity, it had ample opportunities to strike out on its own. Instead, while still managing to punch above its weight Australia did so from behind the shadow of a new, powerful ally. An opportunity missed.
I wager that the #Trump debacle will also be an opportunity missed. We see the writing on the wall . A reluctance to call out the #TrumpAdministration and its disastrous rule by fiat. The persistent bi-partisan support for #AUKUS, fear mongering about hungry bears and pandas lurking about and the ever present #ForeignAffairs ‘ small target syndrome. All of which (and many more indicators) reflect an electorate-wide view that we’re not up to playing in the yard with the big boys/bullies. I don’t know that Australia ever will, it’s just not in its genes.
Australians are such self deprecating souls when it comes to what they can achieve all by themselves in the neighbourhood.
U.S. controls on sensitive defense exports, relaxed for AUKUS partner Australia last year, still apply to submarines, creating hurdles to defense industry collaboration on U.S. Virginia-class sub production. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/04/15/asia-pacific/aukus-nuclear-sub-us-trade-controls/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #asiapacific #aukus #us #defense #submarines #china #donaldtrump
@timrichards I am hoping that Europe does something from the wake-up call they got.
If you vote for dangerous idiots - guess what you get.
Maybe even some Aussies will wake up to what a monumentally stupid idea #aukus actually is!
One still lives in hope...

The sale of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia under the AUKUS treaty faces new doubts as U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs take hold. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/04/10/world/politics/aukus-submarine-sale-scrutiny/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #australia #us #submarines #aukus #china #pla #usmilitary #defense #donaldtrump
#tariffwar how funny we need #china to win. All those stupid #australian rah rah #america are now seeing:
1 what will happen to our economy if #china tanks it
2 what will happen to our economy if we go with USA to war with #china. Notice how US dont give 2 f7cks about us.
#auspol we really need to dump #aukus and throw #us military out of Australia.
Greens leader pushes for submarine pact to be abandoned and says Australia should work with other countries to ‘isolate’ US president

Not only are these #AUKUS #submarines never going to arrive – because they’re not building them fast enough, & the #US government has said they don’t consider giving them to Australia as a priority – but …

it’s dawning on people that the AUKUS deal is bad for a very simple reason. 5-10 years of current US policies and they will no longer have the capability to produce advanced weapons. Xi has absorbed the Churchill saying that you should never interrupt your enemy when they are in the process of destroying themselves. All he has to do is wait. #auspol #AUKUS
