thebigreason<p>Preparing to install a new reverb transformer in a 1960s Gibson GA-20, I broke the terminal in question off of the tube socket. And subsequently realized I forgot to reorder 9-pin tube sockets. This thing has been on my bench for way too long.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VintageAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VintageAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/TubeAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TubeAmp</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>On the bench: Gallien-Krueger 800RB<br />Problem: Intermittent input<br />Diagnosis: Cracked solder joints<br />Fix: Reflow that solder!</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Bass" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Bass</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BassAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BassAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VintageAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VintageAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Basstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Basstodon</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>I completely rebuilt the filter section of the GA-20, taking advantage of the space I bought from cleaning up the power supply. The previous owner put the two filter caps they replaced on above three wire-wound resistors. Heat rises, and it’s important to keep heat away from capacitors as much as possible. These three resistors dissipate a lot of heat.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Gibson" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Gibson</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VintageAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VintageAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/TubeAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TubeAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>Currently on the bench: Strymon Flint, in for a new output jack. And a deep cleaning.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/EffectsPedal" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>EffectsPedal</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarEffects" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarEffects</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Reverb" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Reverb</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Tremolo" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Tremolo</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Electronics</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GutarAmps" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GutarAmps</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>Replaced the power cord on the GA-20 with a grounded cable, removed the death cap, and rewired the rotary power/polarity switch to just power. I landed a 2 lug terminal strip on one of the power transformer bolts to provide a ground point and a more reliable connection for the pilot light and other half of the primary. The previous lug was badly corroded and broke off when I heated it up. Before and after photos below.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Gibson" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Gibson</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VintageAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VintageAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/TubeAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TubeAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>Currently on the bench: Gibson Minuteman GA-20 RVT. In for out-of-control squealing (oscillation) and a recap.</p><p>60s Gibson amps are a spaghetti nightmare, and the eyelet boards have deep, conical reservoirs filled with solder. The leads of every component are very long and are tough to remove, even with a solder pump. In addition to the oscillation, the reverb and tremolo aren’t working.</p><p>I have my work cut out for me.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Gibson" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Gibson</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VintageAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VintageAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/TubeAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TubeAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a></p>
thebigreason<p>Currently on the bench: Mesa Rosette acoustic instrument amplifier. Owner reports a non-tweeting tweeter.</p><p>I don’t normally service Mesa Boogies because of their ludicrous complexity, but this one is actually pretty serviceable. Pro-tip: pull the grill cloth panel straight out using a dental tool in the screw hole.</p><p>The tweeter on this one is open. $16 drop-in replacement on the way. First thing I checked, so I’ll probably waive the bench fee on this. Merry Xmas!</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/AmpRepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmpRepair</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/GuitarAmp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GuitarAmp</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Mesa" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Mesa</span></a></p>
