EU governments should use the €150 billion in loans to buy from European defence firms, von der Leyen says.

"These loans should finance purchases from European producers to help boost our own defence industry. The contract should be multiannual to give the industry the predictability they need. And, finally, there should be a focus on joint procurement," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told lawmakers on Monday.

Markets are hungry for EU war bonds.

The European Union is getting ready to tap markets for up to €150 billion to help finance military spending. If it does, it shouldn’t have any trouble finding takers.

The EU’s biggest selling point as a borrower is its credit rating: Apart from S&P, all of the major ratings companies give it a AAA rating, deeming it effectively risk-free. Of the EU’s big economies, only Germany can match that.

"But that's what you get from performative defence spending. It would be an even bigger waste than the government's Cook Strait ferry fiasco, and if National is willing to throw billions down the drain on new war toys but baulked at iRex, then it shows there is something seriously wrong with their priorities. At least ferries are useful."
