Misskey / Sharkey protip: When @-ing someone on your instance and adding a period (.) behind their tag, be sure to put a space between the tag itself and the period to make sure the tag federates correctly.

Don't do this:
@someone@example.social.

Do this:
@someone@example.social . (notice the space before the last .)

Note that this seems to only be an issue with periods (and underscores (
_), which are allowed in usernames without restrictions). some other punctuation should not mess up the tag in front of it.

Are you getting notifications from a thread that you don't care about? Do you want to stop those notifications?

You can do this by using Mastodon's "Mute conversation" feature:

1. Log in through your server’s website or web app
2. Go to a notification you’ve received from the thread you want to mute
3. Click ⋯ on the notification and select "Mute conversation"

No one will know you've done it, and it will only affect notifications from that thread.

Do you want to keep your Mastodon profile and posts hidden from search engines? If so, you need to do two things:

1. Set your profile to be hidden from search engines
2. Use non-public visibility settings ("Followers only" or "Mentions only") on any posts or replies you want to keep hidden from search engines

See the guide for more info:

If you want, you can use Mastodon through a computer using your server's website or in a desktop app. There's a list of Mastodon desktop apps and options here:

Let me know if I've missed something 🙂

EDIT: You can also find smartphone apps and alternative web interfaces in the general app guide at:

The FediAlgo hashtag filter section now highlights any hashtags you've posted about recently.

Interestingly the most I've used the app the more I've found feed filtering gets a ton of mileage for me. It's a huge change of pace to be able to instantly flip between whatever people are talking about on the Fediverse. Not really something you can do on any other social media platform I'm aware of.

So kannst du dein Publikum wirklich kontrollieren.

@jd

It is more efficient reading here than going to msm websites that keep recycling old news and nonsense.

Checking explore timeline everyday, you will find stuff that is likely already buried too deep in your home timeline to spend time on finding.

Helpful link of the day from @FediTips

I follow someone who posts a lot of great original content, but also boosts a ton of stuff that isn't value-added.

Here's how you can hide their boosts but keep the good stuff.

ALSO: In @ivory go to their profile, click the gear and choose disable boosts. #feditips

You can automatically hide posts containing certain words, phrases, hashtags or emoji by using Mastodon's Filters feature. Filters can be set to either hide posts completely or hide them behind a content warning.

Hopefully this guide covers all the most commonly asked questions about filters. If there's something missing, please let me know in the replies 🙂
