"U.S. scientists, state policymakers, farmers, and others who depend on up-to-date #climate data on Thursday confronted an information blackout from federal regional climate centers across much of the country. “Unfortunately, all data and services offered under the base contract, including this website, will be unavailable unless and until funding is resumed,” a statement on the Southern Regional Climate Center’s website read…The disruption appears to be a temporary paperwork bottleneck within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (#NOAA), rather than a policy decision by agency leadership, officials at several of the centers say. The centers are managed by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. But they are housed chiefly at #universities operating under 5-year agreements. The contracts for payment are approved each year. The last annual cycle ended on 16 April."

"All new research grants have been frozen at the US National Science Foundation (#NSF) — an action apparently ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency (#DOGE)… Documents seen by Nature show that two members of DOGE…have been given access to grant management systems and used that access to prevent grants from receiving funding that were already approved but awaiting finalization. 'That, of course, raises the hairs on the back of our neck in a worrisome way,' an NSF programme officer says."

The #Trump admin is also attempting to #deport some foreign protesters & has revoked hundreds of #visas across the country.

The Trump admin has frozen or canceled some #funding for #universities like #Columbia, #Princeton, #Brown, University of #Pennsylvania, #Cornell & #Northwestern as well.

#Trump has threatened to withhold federal #funding to those institutions over the issues. Rights advocates have condemned what they call an assault on #FreeSpeech & #AcademicFreedom.

US #law [already] requires #universities to report donations from foreign sources exceeding $250k in a year.

In a letter to #Harvard President Alan Garber, Trump’s Dept of *#Education* said Harvard made "incomplete & inaccurate" disclosures between 2014 and 2019.

#Trump's admin said on Fri it sought #Harvard University's records on foreign #funding going back a decade & on some foreign ties, in the govt's latest escalation against the educational institution.

Trump has launched a widely condemned crackdown against top US #universities, including Harvard, over pro-#Palestinian campus #protests & other #CultureWar issues like #transgender rights & #diversity, #equity & #inclusion programs.

PS: This one is more personal for me. In 1996 I visited Palmer Station, an NSF-funded base for polar biology on Anvers Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, and had a wonderful talk and tour with its director, Polly Penhale.

An overhaul of the #housing agency comes on the heels of a congressional deal to fund the government through Sept that increased some housing spending yet did not keep pace with rising rents & the growing demand for federal #aid. The #funding gap could result in about 32,000 #voucher recipients soon losing access to federal #housing aid… on top of additional cuts once funding runs out in a pandemic-era program that expanded voucher availability.

[Ab]Using the #budget - #reconciliation process, #Republican *lawmakers* are now preparing to lavish #ICE with a colossal #funding increase—enough to pay for the kind of #social & #demographic transformation of the US that #immigration hard-liners have long fantasized about achieving.
