FAI(r)RE* Daten, d.h. tatsächlich nachnutzbare Daten, sollten die Zugänglichkeit möglichst zielgruppenorientiert gestalten. #API​s sind wichtig, aber in manchen Fällen zu komplex oder aufwendig. #Dumps können hier eine sinnvolle Ergänzung sein. #Wikidata-Workshop-Wunschkonzert: vorauss. am 22. Mai mache ich bei @digiSberlin einen Wikidata-Workshop für #GLAM|s. Schwerpunkt soll nicht das konkrete Hands-on-Editing sein, sondern eher die allgemeineren Fragen: Wozu kann Wikidata verwendet werden, welche Workflows und Tools stehen zur Verfügung; aber auch Vorbehalte (Vandalismus, Datensouveränität) sollen angesprochen werden. Mich würde interessieren, was Euch hier unter den Nägeln brennt und welche Themen eine Rolle spielen sollten.

A week later, I met with NLA staff and was shocked to be told that downloading ‘content’, such as the text of digitised newspaper articles, was regarded as a breach of the API terms of use. Without API access I can’t continue my work helping researchers make use of Trove. More generally though, the NLA’s actions threaten innovative digital research.

If you're a #Trove API user who has received an email from Trove's 'Community Liaison Team' asking you to confirm acceptance of the API terms of use, you might want to read this for background: updates.timsherratt.org/2025/0

The email doesn't actually explain what has changed in the terms of use. In particular it doesn't explain that downloading digitised newspaper text from the API is a breach of the terms of use and requires an individual exemption. updates.timsherratt.org · Trove API users beware! – the latest in the saga of my cancelled API keysAfter my Trove API keys were cancelled without warning on 21 February, I reluctantly agreed to a meeting with the National Library of Australia. They had provided so little information in their emails, that it seemed to be the only way to find out what was really going on. I came out of the meeting shocked by the NLA’s change in attitude towards API use. TL;DR – you’re probably breaching the API terms of use All Trove API users need to be aware that the NLA now insists that accessing the ‘content’ of resources, rather than just the descriptive metadata, is a breach of the API terms of use.

Researchers and creative writers are encouraged to apply for nine philanthropically funded Fellowships offered by the National Library of Australia in 2026. This year, the amount of financial assistance has increased, with a total of $315,000 of funding available.

Applications for National Library of Australia Fellowships and the Creative Arts Fellowship will close on Monday 5 May 2025.
