Stuart Longland (VK4MSL)<p>I think I spotted where the <a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/LNP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LNP</span></a> got the idea to reduce the fuel excise.</p><p>It's a One Nation (<a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/ONP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ONP</span></a>) policy, except they're proposing doing it for longer.</p><p>&gt; Halve the fuel excise to 26 cents per liter for 3 years with a review after 12 months, with the option to extend further.</p><p><a href="https://www.onenation.org.au/reduce-cost-of-living" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">onenation.org.au/reduce-cost-o</span><span class="invisible">f-living</span></a></p><p>Seems a reasonable proposal on the surface… BUT:</p><p>1. it'll take a while for it to make a difference to those who don't actually pay a fuel excise (e.g. the <a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/carfree" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>carfree</span></a> community and the <a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/ev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ev</span></a> community)<br>2. you risk putting greater demand on fossil fuels, which given the meagre reserves we have and the impact emissions are having on our <a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>climate</span></a>, seems like a bad choice</p><p>Maybe the fuel excise should be going into projects that improve the green space and help offset some of these emissions?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.longlandclan.id.au/tags/AusPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AusPol</span></a></p>
