Busiest Amtrak stations in 2023 by state (A-L)

Source: en.wikipedia.org

Listed below are the Amtrak stations with the highest ridership stats in fiscal year 2023 for each state (starting with letters A-L) served. As can be seen, ridership in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, and Illinois is very strong. Many of the other states in this listing are served by fewer passenger lines and/or Amtrak principally serves rural areas via long-distance routes.

Given its proximity to the major Amtrak hub in Chicago, the state of Indiana has probably the most disappointing numbers, though with one caveat. The very popular South Shore Line interurban railway also links Chicago with communities in the northwest and north central Indiana. In 2023, the South Shore line carried more than 1.5 million passengers along its line linking Chicago’s Millennium Station on the west and the South Bend Airport on the east. In 2025, the South Shore will be opening a second line that parallels the Indiana/Illinois state line.

Stay tuned for similar ridership data from additional states. Peace!

This short video about the sunsetting of "A Box" at Wellington Railway Station is well worth a watch. As a bittersweet window into the working lives of the otherwise invisible KiwiRail workers who keep our rail systems running smoothly;

But also as a snapshot of how little development our rail systems have had since most of it was corporatised in 1991, and renationalised in 2008. Some of the gear in A Box is almost a century old.

"Amtrak discovered corrosion on Borealis’ railcars this week during a routine inspection in compliance with federal requirements. More intense inspections turned up “additional areas of concern” and Amtrak decided to remove the cars from service, spokesman Marc Magliari said Wednesday."

“Each of the cities along the rail line have been in communication to discuss where do we go from here and how far do we push for assistance,” said Calvin Portner, Elk River’s city administrator. “What I see is everyone acknowledging that due to the ridership, it’s kind of a done deal. So what’s next?”
