I learned today just how much money some big universities have to spend on acquisitions for their scholarly collections. Ex: I have a first draft manuscript written in fountain pen by an author whose papers are now held in an Ivy League univ. library. It was never published. I had it appraised by a qualified rare materials expert whose report says it is worth 6 figures on the open market. The curator who oversees these papers didn't blink at that figure.

I will share a few more of the rare books and manuscripts I saw on display at the Adler Planetarium today.
First, an Apollo 13 handbook donated by the Lovell Family. The cover was removed and used in constructing a makeshift carbon dioxide filter that saved their lives.
