Harry Rutherford<p>Not super busy in the moth trap this morning but the first hawkmoth of the year is definitely worth getting out of bed for. <br>I considering trying to pose the moth actually on the cat, but the risk:reward ratio of ‘cute photo’ vs ‘moth getting eaten’ didn't seem great.</p><p><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/TeamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/ukmoths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ukmoths</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/VC17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VC17</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/moths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moths</span></a></p>
David Bradley<p>Someone mentioned Angle Shades yesterday, and one turned up in the garden last night. One of my favourites, not least because of the name, but also its colours and leafy crinkliness <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/teamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mothsMatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mothsMatter</span></a></p><p>Also, new for the year this week: Chocolate-tip, Brimstone, and Puss Moth</p>
David Bradley<p>Trip to Mayford in Surrey. Lit up. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/teamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mothsMatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mothsMatter</span></a> </p><p>Got several moths new to me on the last night - Great Prominent, Scarce Tissue, Brindled Pug, Frosted Green, Lunar Marbled Brown. Also nice ones I'd ticked before: Purple Thorn, Grey Pine Carpet, Red-green Carpet, Muslin, Streamer</p>
Harry Rutherford<p>Not a bad night in the moth trap, starting to move from early spring moths into spring moths proper. Several new for the year, including Frosted Green (not really green), Scorched Carpet (not really a carpet), and this Muslin Moth which lived up to its name by fainting like a Regency debutante.<br><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/moths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moths</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/TeamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/ukmoths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ukmoths</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/VC17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VC17</span></a></p>
David Bradley<p>Array of tiny, pale-green ova in the moth trap last night</p><p>Clouded Drab, Common Quaker, Early Grey, and Hebrew Character present</p><p>From the shape and structure, I'd say Common Quaker. She started off ovipositing neatly, but got a bit slapdash with the second layer</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/teamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mothsMatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mothsMatter</span></a></p>
David Bradley<p>This evening, when I light up, I will be favouring Heath over Robinson and Skinner</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/teamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mothsMatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mothsMatter</span></a> </p><p>If you're into mothing but don't know what I'm on about, I have a glossary just for you</p><p><a href="https://www.sciencebase.com/science-blog/mothing-glossary.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sciencebase.com/science-blog/m</span><span class="invisible">othing-glossary.html</span></a></p><p>Also includes recommended books, websites, and a section on pheromone lures</p>
Harry Rutherford<p>Pretty good moths last night. One new species, Small Brindled Beauty. One which is probably new but might need dissecting to be certain — I think it's either Caloptilia elongella or C. betulicola, either of which would be new for the garden. And I've thrown in a pic of a Dotted Chestnut bc it's pretty.<br><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/moths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moths</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/TeamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/VC17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VC17</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/ukmoths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ukmoths</span></a></p>
Harry Rutherford<p>That was not from today, that was from last September. But I did get 10 species last night, which is good for early March. Most crowd-pleasing was probably Herald:<br><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/TeamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/VC17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VC17</span></a></p>
Harry Rutherford<p>Ooh, I've just noticed that my garden moth list is on the Number Of The Beast. I can reveal that the 666th and thus most satanic species is Plumed Fan-foot, Pechipogo plumigeralis. </p><p>Cower before its dark majesty.</p><p><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/TeamMoth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeamMoth</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/VC17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VC17</span></a></p>
