#trafficEngineers who use ADT as an excuse for not installing traffic calming GTFO. (Traffic calming would reduce speeds and maybe Average Daily Traffic volume, so if you have a safety issue, your job is...) #inducedDemand
#trafficEngineers who use ADT as an excuse for not installing traffic calming GTFO. (Traffic calming would reduce speeds and maybe Average Daily Traffic volume, so if you have a safety issue, your job is...) #inducedDemand
We just need #trafficEngineers to be clear that their first priority is giving drivers a chance to kill someone and maybe one more free parking spot, vs ensuring the safety of our #transportation system.
I tried, y'all, to tell the #trafficEngineers that shit rolls downhill, but they didn't change the design that dumps this gravel onto the intersection. SW 41st & Capitol Hwy #pdxBikes c/w dizzying #carSupremacy
Me [catching up] why are you honking?
Driver: you're on the roadway.
#trafficEngineers:
"on roadway"
Obviously drivers can't read that way over there, cowering on the other side of the sidewalk so cars won't hit it. (Yeah, sidewalks are not able to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians, but we can just "share" traffic lanes and drivers will follow the rules and pay attention like good little robots (and no not even the robot drivers follow the rules.)) #BikeTooter
Despite a little rain, I still managed to transport a child up a hill to a thing five miles away and carry a load of groceries up a hill to get home. Actual obstacles to replacing 10-mile car trips with #eBikes are still only imaginary, political / the #FakeScience excuses of state highway departments' #trafficEngineers, and #honky #drivers. #ClimateDenial #transportation #stroads #ODOTGTFOpdx #leaveTheCarAtHome
straight from the mouths of #trafficEngineers, making cars go fast enough to kill you is expensive #VisionZero
laundry list of intersections that need more #bollards here (street takeovers in Portland) #trafficEngineers #VisionZero
#swBerthaBlvd should have #advisoryBikeLanes in this stretch instead of #yellowCenterlines -- of course the advantage of this car-dominated design is people won't ride bikes and there will be more car traffic, thus creating job security for #trafficEngineers nevermind a bit of #ClimateDenial #pdxBikes #Portland
The #trafficEngineers' reluctance to put any unyielding #Bollards of steel and concrete in the place where they put paint or plastic posts is a lot of excuses about safety but fundamentally it is admitting that drivers simply will not reliably stay on their side of the line and/or the posted speed without somebody standing there and pointing a gun at them. If you're confident enough that unarmored people could safely put their body there, drivers better not hit anything that occupies that spot.
This intersection is a whole encyclopedic fuckery of everything that's wrong with #trafficEngineers. The curb radius designed for high-speed turns through the bike lanes and to avoid damaging the plastic sticks, they're set far away from the place we actually want drivers to be turning, around some obstacle so they don't squeeze people on bikes into the curb. This will also piss off all of the residents who drive everywhere, who depend on the existing left turn pockets for basic mobility
Cars that passed us on the steep part of the corbett hill were just getting a green light to cross Barbur when we caught up (about 1.5 miles later.) Had we been a few seconds later to the light we would have had to wait for the next cycle. The city being covered with thruway stroads is just a constant tax of impediment to mobility and drivers aren't even moving faster than people on e-bikes with 100ft+ hill climbing #trafficEngineers, engineering traffic.
@HayiWena IMO we're not doing anything on climate "advising" until we get into the details of lane widths, whether there is a yellow centerline, and specific placement of #bollards to control car speeds and limit cut-thru traffic, ontvlechten #trafficEngineers
@jef now do the number of deaths per VMT, which is a fairly standard outcome from #trafficEngineers' "standard" designs, and quite a bit higher in the US than in developed nations.
"cause of the crash is under investigation" my ass. If #trafficEngineers can't see the problem here, they shouldn't have any authority at all.
Our approach to road safety is like a three-legged stool of Engineering, Enforcement, and Education — where we keep cutting the legs shorter to make it sit level. Infrastructure educates and enforces, if we would require #trafficEngineers to work to the standards of an Engineering profession rather than fake science and pretending drivers are infallible rule-followers.
#drivers, come get your #honky boy and take him to talk with the #trafficEngineers about this #yellowCenterlines 25mph street with invisible sharrows. We need to defund the DOTs' yellow paint budget #BikeTooter #pdxBikes
Oregon 077FPL black Jeep #DriverAccountability
We can wring our hands about fire trucks or deliveries and keep blaming individual drivers, or we can hold #trafficEngineers accountable and put actual non-breakaway obstacles between car traffic and innocent people.
If your #transportation agency is counting cars and making decisions on lane widths or number of lanes based on this "demand", they are doing it wrong. #InducedDemand is a two-way thing. Car traffic and parking will always expand to fill any space you give it. All thru lanes are optional choices and #trafficEngineers are using fake science to perpetuate the #climateDenial that is our built environment.
