Me [catching up] why are you honking?
Driver: you're on the roadway.

: 🔶 🚲 "on roadway"

Obviously drivers can't read that way over there, cowering on the other side of the sidewalk so cars won't hit it. (Yeah, sidewalks are not able to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians, but we can just "share" traffic lanes and drivers will follow the rules and pay attention like good little robots (and no not even the robot drivers follow the rules.))

The ' reluctance to put any unyielding of steel and concrete in the place where they put paint or plastic posts is a lot of excuses about safety but fundamentally it is admitting that drivers simply will not reliably stay on their side of the line and/or the posted speed without somebody standing there and pointing a gun at them. If you're confident enough that unarmored people could safely put their body there, drivers better not hit anything that occupies that spot.

This intersection is a whole encyclopedic fuckery of everything that's wrong with . The curb radius designed for high-speed turns through the bike lanes and to avoid damaging the plastic sticks, they're set far away from the place we actually want drivers to be turning, around some obstacle so they don't squeeze people on bikes into the curb. This will also piss off all of the residents who drive everywhere, who depend on the existing left turn pockets for basic mobility 🙄

Cars that passed us on the steep part of the corbett hill were just getting a green light to cross Barbur when we caught up (about 1.5 miles later.) Had we been a few seconds later to the light we would have had to wait for the next cycle. The city being covered with thruway stroads is just a constant tax of impediment to mobility and drivers aren't even moving faster than people on e-bikes with 100ft+ hill climbing 🙄 , engineering traffic.

@HayiWena IMO we're not doing anything on climate "advising" until we get into the details of lane widths, whether there is a yellow centerline, and specific placement of to control car speeds and limit cut-thru traffic, ontvlechten

Our approach to road safety is like a three-legged stool of Engineering, Enforcement, and Education — where we keep cutting the legs shorter to make it sit level. 😞 Infrastructure educates and enforces, if we would require to work to the standards of an Engineering profession rather than fake science and pretending drivers are infallible rule-followers.

We can wring our hands about fire trucks or deliveries and keep blaming individual drivers, or we can hold accountable and put actual non-breakaway obstacles between car traffic and innocent people.
