The source of many of my plant dreams these days are these apple seedlings. I got the seed from the inspiring Californian small-scale apple breeder Steven Edholm. Each container is either an open pollinated mix of summer, fall, winter apples or specific styles of apples like savory or red-fleshed apples. There's a few specific crosses, esp. of red-fleshed and highly aromatic apple varieties - some of them that are Edholm's own creations. I've grafted several of his new releases this year like BITE ME!, Amberwine, Black Strawberry, Cherub, Cherry Crush and Tomboy and plan on doing my own crosses too this year. Looking forward in anticipation to taste the fruits.

Gravenstein scion wood from 2024 that's been in the refrigerator. I saw a forum post mentioning they had some old scion wood that was callused up so I went and looked at mine and some of it was callused up so I stuck it in some water and put a bag over it the other day. It was already leafed out and I didn't expect those to turn green but they did. Wait and see if the callus grows roots.

Ich gebe zu, ich bin ein Apfelsnob und lasse mir die leckersten Wellants nach Hause liefern. Diese herrlichen #Äpfel wuchsen auf einer Apfelplantage bei Pluckley und waren sooo lecker // I'm a bit of an #apple snob and order the most wonderful Wellant #apples online. These beauties were growing in an #orchard near #Pluckley and sooo delicious

The Comice pear, the oldest Gravenstein apple, an early blooming peach grown from seed, and the Harcot Apricot. I saw quite a few apricots blooming when I was out and about today. The Japanese type plum here is a couple of warm days away from starting to bloom and it doesn't look like it's died much more. It's more than 50 years old.

You know, #Apples can be stored for up to 5 months without spoiling. In the fridge, in the crisper, it's been there so long, the seeds inside are starting to sprout.
I love Granny Smith Apples. They last so long in the fridge

#Apples, the fruit of Winter. While we think of them as dessert fruit, they also make amazing salads and savoury baked dishes - salads, pickles, chutneys, as well as jams, breakfast dishes, juices and desserts.

They can be eaten raw, poached and roasted. As well as salads, they make amazing soups when incorporated with veggies. Dr Ben, a Korean doctor and blogger, uses apples and pears in his kimchis for sweetening.

🙇‍♀️ to the apple!

@pomological One of my two favourite apples (along with Stayman Winesap). Alas, the local orchard I visit for these varieties had very few Romes this year due to the summer drought (and the planting of more modern varieties that has reduced the number of rows of Romes), and all were sold within two days, which was before I could get to the orchard.
