Hot disaster prep tip. Ride a bike? Got small lights that can be removed and charged via USB? They're handy when the power goes out. A red one is nice if you're comfortable with mostly sitting in the dark because it won't torch your night vision. A white one can also be useful. Bike lights often have good battery life relative to other things like aging cell phones. #BikeTooter #DisasterPreparedness

The under handlebars 8 speed trigger shifter doesn't fit on the shorter black riser bars. So moving them back to the blue cruiser bike.

The Specialized now has some very wide bars that will accommodate the shifter.

Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific _daylight_ time (UTC-7)!

This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. There is room for more!

Bike tip: a great thing about bicycling is you can always get off your bike and become a pedestrian. So if road conditions ahead look scary, dismount and walk your bike on the sidewalk til you get to a place you feel comfortable again. You still save time vs. walking the whole way, and can ease into urban riding. #bikeTooter

With summer coming soon, I've done an inventory of the kit that's worked for cool-weather solo camping here in Japan so's I don't forget. For funzies and in case it might be useful to someone, here's the checklist.

I bought the wrong size tires for the blue cruiser. Oops. Those are getting returned tomorrow. The correct sized ones should be here today.

I got the handlebars that were on the Specialized off. Put them on the blue bike. I'm putting some black Vans grips on it.

Pleased so far with how it's coming out. Should be ridable by this weekend. I still need to find a shim for the seatpost.

I'm having a hell of a time getting the drive side crank off. Bought what I think was the right tool. Probably just user error.

Trying to convert this bike to a 1x8.

Waiting on a few parts to get here before I attempt cabling anything or doing more with the cockpit.

Day 2:
After a long trip, today was a day to get caught up on urgent home items. So my rides were purely essential errands. First in the morning it was off the lawyer's office in the rain to pick up estate planning documents. Then in the afternoon off to the county assessor's office to hand in a homestead tax application, but by this time the rain had ceased. Yesterday's snow is mostly gone this afternoon, but was still obvious this morning.

I don’t think many people realize that you can buy a 40lb e-bike for $1300 now (without subsidies) and the impact it has on your time spent outdoors is immediate.

My wife looks forward to weekend rides now where before she would grumble at the mere suggestion of getting on a bike.

I still ride my “manual” single speed. But it’s a fun challenge to keep up with her.
