InstagramBlair Imani Ali • Smarter in Seconds on Instagram: "The new pope’s ethnicity includes Louisiana Creole. But does that mean Leo XIV is Black? Let’s get Smarter in Seconds about the differences between race, ethnicity, and nationality. As someone who shares this ethnicity it always surprising when I see Louisiana Creole enter mainstream discussion! It’s true that many Creole people are racialized as Black but that’s not true for everyone and it might not even be true for siblings within the same family. This is because race is based on perception while ethnicity is based on shared ancestry and culture. Are there any big questions you might have about race, racism, ethnicity, or nationality? Let me know what I should cover in the next episode of Smarter in Seconds!"16K likes, 200 comments - blairimani on May 9, 2025: "The new pope’s ethnicity includes Louisiana Creole. If you follow me I would ask you to consider blocking @copblaster . They say they are about reporting misconduct. But I've scrolled through their feed several time and they are mainly posting the pictures of Black and Latino police officers. There's a few white ones sprinkled in, but mainly not. I am no fan of the police. You can read my #abolition posts, But these postings seem racially targeted. Your mileage may vary but at least think about it. Thanks.

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition #CommunitySafety #ViolenceReduction As mentioned in the story above, progress is always fragile, and is often made more tenuous by callous government action. This second link highlights how difficult government can make it for community based programs to work effectively. The open secret is state and federal governments don’t always want a reduction in violence because it fuels their demands to add more police. 2/3

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #AllisonRussell #Music #Canada Canadian artist Allison Russell is on tour in the US now. I know her from country music, but after seeing the show, her music is much broader than just country. She'll be in Canada from the end of June for several music festivals. If you are old enough to know who Annie Lennox is, here's a song they recorded together recently about troubles here and in the world.

Apr. 30th was #InternationalJazzDay and since today is also Friday, I'm sharing a clip of Gwana Jazz Master Abdellah El-Gourd. Gwana music emerged out of the cultural fusion of West African spirituality and music with North Africa music. Jazz artists from the US became attracted to Gwana and incorporated some of its elements. Fast forward to 16:58 to hear the Gwana rhythms.

For today's selection I just want to remind people that African people are dying every day in conflicts across the continent , including Sudan and most people could care less. Omer Elamin released a cover of the patriotic song “Ana Sudani Ana” by the late and great Sudanese singer Hassan Khalifa Elatbarawi. The title roughly translates to "I am Sudanese." Its the sadness of all Sudanese over the civil war.

Censorship and book bans are a thing for the MAGA crowd. Here in the DMV there's a new play called BAD BOOKS at the Roundhouse Theatre in Bethesda, MD. Its about the unforeseen consequences of a mother trying to get a book banned and the librarian who lent it to her son fired.
Good story telling. It runs until May 4th.

People had to die for freedom & to legally be seen as equal & as humans. If you think living in digital silos & blocking out everything you disagree with will make the world a better place, I have a planet to sell you. I find the #fediverse to be harmful to progress as people are encouraged to make homes in these siloed echo chambers. It’s also a space that discourages global search, full text search and quote posts : tools that are actively used by Black & Brown folks and activists. These spaces have long been harmful to Black and Brown folks yet the lot of you talk about how much “better, ethical and enjoyable it is. That often tells me a lot about who you all are. Many people in their first hour here have had worse experiences than in a decade plus on #BigSocial If you want this space to be some left-leaning white utopia then fine, but stop advertising it as a space for all and stop attacking spaces like #Bluesky that makes it easier for Black and Brown folks to have a digital experience they are comfortable with. #fediverse #Blackfedi #BlackTwitter #fedi #Twittermigration
