JeffUp in the northern reaches of Katmai National Park, a huge salmon run occurs later in the summer. Bears travel from hundreds of miles away to congregate and gorge themselves on the bounty of flesh that these salmon bring. We are tasked with doing monitoring during busy weeks in these areas, covering human use, bear use and bear dynamics. We spend a lot of time with binoculars latched to our heads, staring at bears. But with that you see some intensely interesting behavior from bears. This photo brings a lot of memories for me specifically. We were sitting on the edge of a river while across the river several large males jockeyed for position in the best fishing spots. This smaller male sat on the perimeter, patiently watching and waiting for his time to strike. When a particularly intense squabble happened between the alpha males, this bear quickly snuck in, snatched a salmon, and was all the way across the river into the long grass before the dominant bears could realize what just happened. Even when bears are actively being kicked out by bigger bears, there is so much food abound that no one is going hungry. Each one of these salmon carry around 4000 calories per fish, and the bears can eat upwards of 90,000 calories a day. JeffBear viewing coastal brown bears can be very intense at times. This sow and her 3 COY (Cub Of Year, or cubs born this year) came from about 100 yards away from us and slowly foraged their way over to where we were sitting. She and the cubs showed no signs of aggression or intolerance so we let them get closer and closer. Got to the point where I wasn’t comfortable standing up and moving away since she was a mere 2 meters from us, and we politely talked to her into moving away just a smidge. Often times females will bring their cubs over towards humans to act as a babysitter or human shield to protect them from male bears. They know that males tend to stay clear from humans and will hang out near humans to help them relax when boars are around. Anytime you get these close encounters it rattles you. So much emotion and primal instinct screaming at you to get out of there. JeffOh what big claws you have!” Coastal brown bears are such an amazing animal to see in the wild. These large omnivores spend most of their summers feeding on grasses, sedges and different berries that grow throughout Alaska. But once July comes around, millions of salmon flood into river systems of coastal Alaska, and these bears go on a fish eating extravaganza. Observing different fishing habits of these bears shows immense individuality of each animal. Some go for a smash and grab, others patiently wait for salmon to swim underneath them and quickly go in for the grab, while others splash around in utter overwhelming confusion, sending hundreds of salmon swimming for their lives. Coastal brown bears and grizzly bears are the same species, but brown bears are defined by having access to salmon runs. While grizzly tend to live more inland where food is more scattered and they are forced to travel further and be more protective of their food sources.
