I’ve just hit 500 days of #duolingo.

I know it has its detractors but it has transformed my #Spanish. I’m still not great at verbal communication, although I can now get by, but it’s really improved my reading Spanish.

Mich würden mal Erfahrungen dazu interessieren, was ist gut, was nervt, lohnt sich das große Familienabo, was sollte eins beachten?

Es geht wirklich speziell um Duolingo, ich brauche keine Empfehlung für andere Apps!

gerne boosten :BoostOK:

As I decided to start looking for alternatives to #duolingo, I have realized that the best alternatives are the real human beings who speak the languages I want to learn. People have learned languages directly from each other for millenia. I don't actually need an app for that.

Sharing knowledge with each other is #MutualAid.

I used Duolingo once for several weeks, on the bus to and from work every single day, supposedly learning a language. The only thing I remember from that language and still retain to this day, is how to pronounce the language based on its non-latin alphabet, something I studied outside of Duolingo. I can't even count to 10 and I don't remember the app ever trying to teach me how to.

At some point, #Duolingo announced that it would start using AI to generate the exercises and laid off some of the linguists who had been writing them. Over the next few months, the humor in the exercises disappeared and the personalities of the characters started becoming more stereotyped but less coherent. It was less fun. But it was still good practice, and my writing got more fluent with fewer mistakes.
I grumbled about their recent announcement that they were doubling down on AI, I was also getting annoyed with the increasing amount of advertising. But assumed that nothing much would change.

I have some thoughts on the #duolingo AI enshittification thing. I have been using the service for six years, and I really enjoyed it. I use it mostly for a language I studied in school and already spoke at a B1 level with a pretty good vocabulary, but lots of grammar mistakes, and occasional difficulty hearing spoken words. For a long time, the exercises were humorous and the animated characters had personalities.
At some point in the last six years, I started using this language professionally (but not every day), and I had to increase my level though other study to the C1 level to deal with some technical language. This I did mostly through reading and talking to colleagues, but I found the app useful for daily practice, and sometimes it would help me connect some things that native speakers would say that I didn't understand.

I'm loving Mango Languages so far. I'm sad I can't get it free but it's got perfectly paced lessons and has me speaking Cantonese so quickly!

Once my #Duolingo runs out it will not be renewed. But today is not that day.

My question is... ARE YOU?!

I just thought to check and yes, Lingo Legend has referral codes.

If you sign up and use my code, it looks like they will give both you and me some in-game currency.

Please help yourself if you'd like to try it out and that's something that would make you happy.

Code: QWF09

Has anyone had success with pursuing a charge back with your credit card company for leaving Duolingo? I'd love to know any advice or "magic words" from people who have direct experience with this.

*Meaning I want to hear from you if you've done it, not if you're speculating or you just like to pontificate in strangers' mentions. Thanks, sweeties.

As I try out new apps in my quest to replace Duolingo, I have been playing with Lingo Legend and so far it is delightful.

It's not for hardcore, serious language study but for light review it's just what I need when I am tired but want to study a bit. (YMMV.) Plus it's Canadian!

I suspect I may eventually pay the one-time fee for unlimited access and work through all their languages.
