Here's another plant that we saw on our class tour of the Allan Herbarium today in Lincoln. This is New Zealand's extinct mistletoe, *Trilepidea adamsii*, from the North Island. This was the last specimen collected of this species, from 1954 in Maungakawa near Cambridge in the Waikato.

You can read more about this species on the NZ Plant Conservation Network's webpage: nzpcn.org.nz/flora/species/tri

Sea pigs, icefish and trilobites: #Antarctica’s mysterious marine life – in pictures theguardian.com/environment/ga

"True #trilobites went #extinct more than 250m years ago, but the #SouthernOcean is home to a living lookalike: Ceratoserolis trilobitoides. They have a segmented, armoured exoskeleton, which helps protect them from predators... after a marine science voyage, a team aboard #Australia’s icebreaker #Nuyina has collected some remarkable species from the waters around the #DenmanGlacier"

Ridiculous rationalization:

#Trump’s #interior sec cited a #biotech company’s claim to have brought back the dire wolf to slash 50 years of #EndangeredSpecies protections.

Many scientists expressed skepticism that the pups could be classified as part of a canine species that went #extinct over 10k years ago. But Interior Secy #DougBurgum said the achievement demonstrates that it is not government #regulations but innovation that will save species.

Game of #clones: Colossal’s new #wolves are cute, but are they dire?
#ColossaBiosciences claims it has revived an #extinct species, but scientists outside the company are skeptical.
It’s making a bold new claim—that it has actually “de-extincted” an animal called the #direwolf. Inside a preserve roam three striking snow-white wolves—which a startup called Colossal Biosciences says are members of a species that went extinct 13,000 years ago, now reborn via #biotechnology.

The Return of the Dire Wolf

The dire wolf once roamed an American range that extended as far south as Venezuela and as far north as Canada, but not a single one has been seen in over 10,000 years, when the species went extinct. Plenty of dire wolf remains have been discovered across the Americas, however, and that presented an opportunity for a company named Colossal Biosciences.

And...I'm not sure this is a good idea...

I am setting up an #aquarium and choosing what life I want in my tank.

It's a really sobering moment to look at #fish at my local aquarium and see that some are #extinct in the wild.

The same goes with the #coral reefs in #Australia

I am considering setting up a separate tank just for coral to preserve a little bit of what is being lost... or perhaps I should say sacrificed.

We're not losing the species, we're killing them.

A species of dove that disappeared from the wild more than 50 years ago has been bred at a National Trust site near Bicester.
The aviary team at Waddesdon Manor, just over the Oxfordshire border in Buckinghamshire, successfully bred the Socorro dove, which became extinct in the wild in the 1970s.
Two chicks, known as squabs, were hatched in August 2024, marking the first successful breeding of the species at the site.
