valentinziThe photo shows me in working cloth with one arm resting on the second pillar of the fence. I am pretty satified with the result so far. I still have to replace two or three fence posts as they are too short in the slopy terrain or to loose.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/woodworking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodworking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/craftsmanship?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#craftsmanship</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/fenceproject?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fenceproject</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/handcrafted?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#handcrafted</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/farmwork?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#farmwork</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/naturalpreservation?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturalpreservation</a>

valentinziThe first round fencepost accuratly wedged and fixed with stones.<br> I carried about 30 fencepost on the shoulder into the forest, for rebuilding a fence in order to demarcate our private property (deciduous forest stocked pasture).<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/woodworking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodworking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/craftsmanship?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#craftsmanship</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/fenceproject?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fenceproject</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/handcrafted?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#handcrafted</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/farmwork?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#farmwork</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/naturalpreservation?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturalpreservation</a>
valentinziLast week, I shaped the tips of most of the columns using a chainsaw.<br> Today, I continued charring the <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/larchwood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#larchwood</a> columns (with most of the sapwood removed) using a propane burner. This is a variation of the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique (Japanese: 焼杉), in which the wood surface is carbonized to improve durability, weather resistance, and protection against fungal decay.<br> <br> I opted for a propane gas burner instead of an open flame, as it allows for more even and controlled charring. The temperature ranged between approximately 1200°C and 1800°C. Each column took about 10–15 minutes. I kept the flame constantly moving to avoid scorching any single spot and to achieve a consistent, shallow burn across the surface.<br> <br> I'm pretty satisfied with the results.<br> From my experience, the durability is best when the surface of the heartwood is smooth and evenly charred. I'm convinced that charring larch wood without the sapwood results in greater resistance compared to burning the entire wood (with intact sapwood).<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/woodworking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodworking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/craftsmanship?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#craftsmanship</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/shousugiban?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#shousugiban</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/fenceproject?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fenceproject</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/handcrafted?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#handcrafted</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/farmwork?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#farmwork</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/naturalpreservation?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturalpreservation</a>
