Is that affecting cover art and authors now?

When I look at covers, I see lots of fantasy-perfect people who are sexy or dangerous as the genre demands, or Michael Whelan grand landscapes of lands or space vistas that fire the imagination with incredible intricacies. Plenty of great artists do both, mind you. I've commissioned art.

What other authors (or marketers) see, sadly is a resource out of reach financially, out of budget, or a waste of their money when it's "free" and you don't have to interact with ugh people.

I miss the great covers of old, sometimes abstract, sometimes simple photography, sometimes pastiche, often art differently talented people can do without becoming a Rembrandt, which arguably might be more affordable for demand or creation effort. Or authors (assuming indie here) could simply learn to use stock art and try composting images and titles themselves. Creating covers from found materials can be powerful and can hint at and support narratives.

AI art is lazy. I agree it's a criterion for not buying a book.

I don't consider myself an artist, but the cover below is in lieu of a handsome bare-chested stereotypical bearded male with outstretched white angel wings on which the forward margin of his primary feathers are ruby-edged and look sharp. Didn't know angels can have razor wings, did you? Considering the feminist subject matter of the story, I'm not sure I'd want the artist's impression of ethnicity or masculinity. My first cover was for a story that took place in Japan and I got a Vogue model; marketing

Sometimes simple can be evocative.

#BoostingIsSharing

#Author #Writer #AI #genAI #AIArt #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon

Mariya Delano
The more time goes on, the more conflicted I get about #AI. (or, more specifically, generative AI. I like causal AI a fair bit)

On one hand, I hate so much about it:
the needless environmental and electronic parts waste, the impact on labor, the monopolistic nature of main organizations driving it, the endless conversations about AGI and other absurdly utopian (or dystopian) futures, the widespread theft of IP and human work, the devaluation of labor and craft… so much of it is not okay at all.

On the other hand, I kinda get it?
I like to test software for myself, so I've been dipping my toes into some popular AI tools over the past couple of years. I have a paid subscription to ChatGPT (which I don’t feel great about, I know), and I have found genuine utility in it.

More so, I feel so conflicted when I talk to people I respect and who I think are very smart and creative and they tell me how in love they are with all of these AI tools, about the complex workflows they build, about their experiments with agentic AI and integrations... These people seem so excited, so alive, so joyous about the things that this technology allows them to do. They often wouldn't have had the skills / knowledge / financial capital to do some of those things with human efforts alone. And now I see them coding their own tools, doing complex data analysis, trying creative experiments with graphics / text / video...

And I feel like a total jerk going "BUT ACTUALLY THIS IS UNETHICAL AND INEFFICIENT AND YOU SHOULD STOP IT BECAUSE AI SUCKS".

The technology behind all these gen AI models does have real utility, and it has kicked off a lot of creativity from people who wouldn't have dabbled in those kinds of projects otherwise.

So I don't know how to feel. Because I can't let go of the guilt and the real problems and the awareness of how much empty hype there is.

#technology #artificialintelligence #genAI #ChatGPT

AnthonySoftware "agents" were a hype-y topic when I was a graduate student 25 years ago. I wrote one for a class. I feel like what's being called "agents" or "AI agents" these days are even less capable than what seemed possible a quarter of a century (1) ago when I was in school.

What I thought then is still true today: to make something like a software agent legitimately useful for a lot of people would require a large amount of low-level grunt work and non-technical work (2) of the sort that the typical Silicon Valley company is unwilling to do. (3) The technology is the absolute easiest part of this task. Throwing a Bigger Computer at the problem leaves all those other pieces of work undone. It's like putting a bigger engine in a car with no wheels, hoping that'll make the car go.

By the way #AI companies and VCs, I'm available for contract work and have done due diligence research before if you ever want to stop wasting everyone's time and money!

#AI #GenAI #GenerativeAI #LLM #agents #hype #SiliconValley #VentureCapital #dev #tech

(1) Which we've been told repeatedly is essentially infinite time in the tech world.
(2) Establishing semantic data standards and convincing a large enough number of people to implement them being an important component. LLMs do not magically develop protocols and solve all the ETL-style problems of translating among different ones. The Semantic Web didn't really stick for a lot of reasons, but one reason is that it's hard!
(3) Back when I was still in the startup world I was asked several times by VCs to tell them what I thought about some new startup that claimed to be able to magically clean and fuse data. I think they're still very keen on investing in this style of magic, because it requires an intense amount of human labor, but I think where companies landed was invisibilizing low-paid workers in other countries and pretending a computer did the work they did. Which has also been happening for well over a quarter of a century.
