DMVs get demonized a lot as poster children for an inefficient, uncaring government bureaucracy, but I have to say that my last two visits to the DMV here in Madison have been really good. Today, I went there without an appointment to get a Real ID compliant driver's license, and despite the crush of people who waited to the last minute to get one (like me), I was in and out of there in about 30 minutes.
When an erstwhile software developer attends a protest...
(Please no comments on the typography...I know a proper coding typeface should be monospace, especially for Python, but if I may channel Fermat, the sign was a bit too narrow...)
Storms have so far stayed to the North and West of us here in Madison, though the Eau Claire area has been impacted by several tornadoes. Right now, it's just hot, muggy, and gross (for April).
TFW when storm chasers are migrating to your neck of the woods!
This week I plan to go to the Madison May Day protest. I have a good idea for a protest sign...stay tuned. :)
If you're in the Madison area, join me and others who oppose the Trump administration and its attacks on workers, immigrants, higher education, science, the economy...!
One of the reasons I picked the city I live in: no billboards in the downtown core.
Its rather nice.
The Madison Public Library made a tool to estimate the value you get out of your public library: https://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/about/value
I guess it's specific to the Madison library, but I think the estimate is good for any US-based public library.
For my own usage, it tells me that for every tax dollar I pay that goes to the library, I get $10.63 in value. What a deal!
(Coincidentally, my family does a monthly donation to the Friends of the Verona Public Library fund...of $10!)
If you don't have plans for the weekend in #MadisonWI: This is going to be great! https://www.wortfm.org/the-freedom-of-biking-with-artist-julia-bourdet/ April 27, 11 am at the Arboretum
And here's the segment. As per usual, I look freakishly tall when standing next to other people... https://www.wmtv15news.com/2025/04/17/just-time-spring-new-bike-path-opens-madisons-east-side/ #FediBikes #MadisonWI
We convinced the reporter to do a live segment while biking herself! She took a BCycle down the ramp of the Autumn Ridge overpass #FediBikes #MadisonWI

It’s been a wonderful first half-day in #MadisonWI. We got to check out some of the old stomping grounds from our time in graduate school 25 years ago, especially State Street and the Capitol Square. We spent some time at the #Wisconsin #IceCube Particle #Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) and met with colleagues of ours there. It’s good to be in our academic home, where we first met.
I am excited for @jodi’s #colloquium in the #Physics Department tomorrow afternoon!
#MadisonWI folks, take a few seconds to estimate how many people in Dane County experienced food insecurity (not having enough food to eat) in 2024... now read the new PHMDC report about it to see how close you got: https://publichealthmdc.com/blog/2025-04-02/hunger-close-to-home-tackling-food-insecurity-in-dane-county

I'm not looking to sell these guys - especially if a teacher who could put them in the hands of students who could make use of them.
(wouldn't turn down any re-homing fee offered of course).
Hand made 1950's - mid 60's altos by Beaugnier in Paris (made across the street from Selmer, sometimes by the same guys).
I just can't do alto :-/.
