#Moths never cease to amaze me. Weather seemed promising last night: mild, drizzle forecast, light to moderate wind. Yet, only four in total. A Muslin Moth and Early Grey (both on my feed already).
The other two were first sightings in 2025 for Brimstone Moth and the wonderfully named Chocolate Tip. Chocolate Tips usually hold their wing so it appears tubular, but this one was more open.
It's that time of the year again. This time with a new little powerhouse. I indulged myself and bought a LepiLED. I tried yesterday at home but the wind picked up so the trap stayed empty. Tonight it's brightening up my mum's garden and the first three moths are already nestled in the egg trays.

First #moth box of 2025. Wasn't expecting anything, to be honest, so surprised to get three. Of course, I could have bet my mortgage on them being these three given how early it is in the season. Hardy souls from last night:
1) Hebrew Character (left)
2) Early Grey (top right)
3) Common Quaker (bottom right)
Last night I heard a blackbird sing...spring is coming, and with spring comes an abundance of moths. Mothing is a favourite pastime of mine. This year I have upgraded my gear, and found some new alluring spots to spend nighttime looking for new wonderful critters. It will occasionally be very cold, I will get stung by mosquitoes, bitten by ticks and my back will be killing me for lugging all that gear off the trail. But seeing a badger come closer out of curiosity, having bats swooping low over my head, hearing owls calling, foxes barking, and on top of that, coming home with a memory-card bursting with pictures of beautiful moths.. that just makes me check the forecast twice a day. How soon can I go again
