Georges #ORWELL

Anat Shenker-Osorio: #Fascism and the English #language: The words we use matter. So let's say what's actually happening.

"As the #MAGA regime’s ongoing assault on our lives and our loved ones ramps up, many of us feel tongue-tied - at a loss for the words to express what is happening, let alone marshal resistance to it. But, as #Orwell said, “if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought…"

The Contrarian · Fascism and the English languageBy Anat Shenker-Osorio

> George #Orwell is a useful guide to what we’re witnessing. He understood that it is possible for people to seek power without having any vision of the good. “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake,” an apparatchik says in #1984. “We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in #power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power.” How is power demonstrated? By making others #suffer. 1/2 #crueltyisthepoint

#Orwell predicted the practice, but not the process, of rewriting history. Just rewrite the computer memory. There is something to be said for paper documents and signatures in ink.

There is federal law about altering odometers. Who thought the manufacturer would alter the record upwards? #Tesla ought to be strung up for this.

The American magazine Newsweek suggested how dictators #putin, #Trump, and Xi #Jinping will divide the world into spheres of influence.

#Europe, will we tolerate this?

Ignoring the fact that this map was copied from #Orwell's 1984, it's not realistic in any way - #Russia, with an economy the size of the Iberian peninsula, has absolutely zero chance of invading all of Europe.

It's a delusional fantasy with no basis in reality.

@ais_wey @Lana Forget "can't" and instead read "don't" want to see what's happening right in front of them. It's willful ignorance because they fear that seeing it will make it real. Those who aren't applauding it just want it to not be real, and most choose to look away in so far as it's not affecting them yet. It's fine when it's done to "the other". George #Orwell remarked on that in his novel 1984, see attached picture.

> "[We].. remember.. scenes from.. Orwell’s.. 1984: the mandatory love demanded for the spectral dictator Big Brother; the malleability of facts at the Ministry of Truth; or the ruling party’s memorably grim slogans, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery.” But for me, the most disturbing image of all — and I first read the book in high school — was the “Two Minutes Hate,”

"Disappointing but not surprising" that elite instituions quickly roll for power
> ... although the country is quite free, nevertheless unpopular ideas can be suppressed without the use of force. Gave a couple of examples, provided a few words of explanation, which were to the point. One particularly pertinent comment was his observation on a quality education in the best schools, where it is instilled into you that there are certain things that it simply wouldn’t do to say—or, we may add, even to think.

1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print (or Ticktoks, or reels, or whatever)

2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.

3. If it it possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

4. Never use the passive [voice] where you can use the active.

While freely conceding that the Trumpublican regime exhibits certain features which the humanitarian may be inclined to deplore, we must, I think, agree that a certain curtailment of the right to political opposition is an unavoidable concomitant of transitional periods, and that the rigors which the American people have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement.
