Human Rights Watch: Press freedom in Greece going 'from bad to worse'.

A new report published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has delivered a scathing assessment about the state of press freedom and the difficulties facing journalists in Greece.

HRW says the 'image internationally of a forward-thinking and modern administration' that Athens wishes to present to the world is at odds with the reality on the ground.

#Palestine / The RSF condemns the latest murder of a journalist in Gaza and calls for urgent international action to stop the massacre of journalists there

[...] “Enough! Words fail to convey the endless nightmare faced by journalists in Gaza. Yahya Sobeih was torn from his profession and his family by a bomb from the Israeli armed forces. His name now joins the list of almost 200 journalists killed in Gaza over the past 18 months. The impunity for crimes committed against these reporters cannot be tolerated, yet the international community continues to fail each day to force Israel to protect Palestinian journalists. Reporters Without Borders will pursue its campaign to the very end to ensure that justice is served and those responsible are held to account. ---Thibaut Bruttin, RSF Director General

Freelance journalist Yahya Sobeih was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on May 7th while covering the aftermath of a previous bombing. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns the killing, noting Sobeih is among nearly 200 journalists killed in Gaza during Israel's offensive, with 44 of those deaths directly related to their work. RSF calls for urgent international action to protect journalists in Gaza and end the impunity for crimes against them. They are also petitioning for the opening of the border for international and Israeli war correspondents.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic lawmakers urge Shari Redstone, controlling shareholder of Paramount, to reject settling President Trump's $20 billion lawsuit against CBS News, claiming it undermines First Amendment rights. They caution that complying would encourage further intimidation of the press and threaten democracy itself. The senators stress the importance of resisting authoritarian trends in Trump’s approach to media. Read more: alternet.org/trump-cbs/

Alternet.org · 'It will only embolden him': Dems issue CBS a warning regarding Trump assaultBy Jake Johnson

"It should be no surprise that 2024 was among the deadliest for journalists in 30 years. Across the world, we’re seeing a sharp increase in attacks on media pluralism and independence, as governments of all stripes undermine the rule of law and democratic governance, erode protections for whistleblowers, and use dangerous narratives to smear journalists and human rights defenders. In many countries, governments are also passing laws that cite national security as a rationale for silencing speech they don’t like. This is happening in a context where civic space continues to shrink globally; after the U.S. administration decided to suspend funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), dozens of independent media outlets in more than 30 countries were severely impacted.

These are far from the only threats. As we mark World Press Freedom Day 2025, we’re highlighting some of the gravest and most persistent digital threats to journalism: the largely unchecked rise of spyware, persistent attacks on encryption, increased disinformation and abuse on online platforms, and the weaponization of laws to enable the silencing of journalists and human rights defenders. While these threats aren’t new, the current context puts people and communities already at risk in greater danger. Make no mistake: this is a crisis. Governments and all relevant stakeholders must take urgent and immediate action to save press freedom in the digital age."

"After a century of gradual expansion of press rights in the United States, the country is experiencing its first significant and prolonged decline in press freedom in modern history, and Donald Trump’s return to the presidency is greatly exacerbating the situation." #Jornalism #Media #PressFreedom #FirstAmendment #RSF #USPol #ReportersWithoutBorders rsf.org/en/index?year=2025

"Israeli soldiers have been harassing a Palestinian activist who appeared in Louis Theroux’s recent documentary The Settlers to talk about Israel’s apartheid abuses in the occupied West Bank. Issa Amro shared footage of IDF troops raiding his home over the weekend, days after Theroux’s film debuted on the BBC.
Israelis not only murder journalists, attack journalistic institutions and block journalists from entering the Gaza Strip, they also persecute Palestinian civilians who speak with journalists.
If you haven’t yet watched The Settlers, I highly recommend doing so. It’s so damning that I’ve seen people expressing astonishment that it made it past the BBC’s censors, but really, what’s to censor? It’s an hour of Israelis telling a video camera what Israelis think in their own words.

One of the best ways to tell the truth about the real Israel is to just point a camera at these freaks and let them tell it themselves. Theroux’s interviewing style lends itself particularly well to this type of exposure."
