🎙️ When AI writes code, builds models, and simulates threats… who checks the checker?

In this last On Location Conversation from #RSAC2025, Alex Kreilein and John Sapp Jr. join Sean Martin, CISSP to explore what trust actually means in the age of AI-generated security tooling — and how modern #AppSec teams must rethink validation, #resiliency, and #risk.

This episode cuts deep into:

Why “trust the output” is not enough in AI-driven workflows
How #AI security debt is becoming the new tech debt
Why we need #zerotrust thinking applied to models and agents
The real shift: from patching CVEs to building resilient architecture
The role of traceability, governance, and context-driven decision-making

If you’re serious about secure AI, application security, and shifting AppSec left (the right way), this conversation will challenge what you think you know — and help reframe what secure development actually looks like.

"Modern civilisation has a number of extremely delicate and highly interconnected components whose graceful degradation is effectively impossible."

It is "much easier to break things than to build them up. The government administrations of Britain, France and Germany for example, were set up at a time in the nineteenth century when the rising middle classes demanded a properly functioning state[…]. It took perhaps a generation for professional, neutral public services to fully emerge."

"Forty years of globalised neoliberalism have broken our societies, our economies and our political systems, and we no longer have the ability to put them back together."

Another great Arbor Earth Day celebration is in the books, and I think this was the best yet. Attendees not only got free compost (thanks, @athensservices) and saw some cool EVs, but also got to check out dozens of other booths with great ideas about sustainability, recycling, and resilience.

The event may be over, but it’s not too late to offer input on the city’s revision of its Active Transportation Plan at toaksatp.org.

Thanks to all who put this together, and all who attended!

#ClimateChangeGardening: 12 strategies for a #resilient #garden

by Niki Jabbour

"#ClimateChange gardening is a set of tactics that make our yards and gardens more resilient to extreme weather as well as reduce our personal impacts on the climate. There are several ways to approach climate change gardening. You can use sustainable and organic gardening practices that put soil, #biodiversity, and #pollinators first. You can also plan to reduce plastic waste, up-cycle materials, and collect #rainwater.

3 reasons to care about climate change gardening

"Climate change gardening influences the health and success of your garden. When you nurture your soil, foster biodiversity, and support pollinators you create a garden that is more resilient to the challenges of climate change. Here are 3 reasons to care about climate change gardening.

- Extreme weather – The impact of weather related challenges like droughts, storms, precipitation, flooding, and above or below normal temperatures can be reduced with climate change gardening strategies.
- Pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects – Climate change can affect pollinators and birds in various ways. Weather extremes can impact migration timing and success, host plant growth and bloom time, disease and pest issues, and habitat and food supply.
- Non-native invasive pests and plants – With a longer growing season, invasive plants, pests, and diseases will move north and potentially affect plant health and crop yields."

Understanding #Climate #Resilience in #Gardening

"Climate resilience in gardening refers to the ability of a garden to adapt to changing climatic conditions and environmental stressors. It involves selecting plants that can survive #ExtremeWeather events, conserving #water, building #HealthySoil, and employing #sustainable practices that minimize #environmental impact.

The key components of climate resilience include:

- Biodiversity: A diverse plant selection can create a more robust ecosystem capable of withstanding pests, diseases, and changing weather.
- Soil Health: Healthy soil increases water retention and nutrient availability, allowing plants to thrive even during dry spells.
- Water Management: Efficient use of water resources is vital in periods of drought or heavy rainfall.
- Plant Selection: Choosing native or drought-tolerant plants can ensure that your garden is better adapted to local conditions."

Cornell University: #Gardening in a Warming World

"Gardeners are keen observers of what is required to grow healthy plants of all types and sizes. New strategies and solutions to the problems presented by cultivating living things are often contemplative acts. These actions will hold gardeners in good stead as we face climate change – an unprecedented phenomenon that amplifies all those conditions that can make or break our gardening success. Deep reflection on our strategies in tending our lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetables will be required to manage and adapt to this latest – and biggest – challenge.

"The Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer network is working to strengthen understanding and inspire us to take actions in our gardens and communities that will help address the global crisis of climate change. Supporting this effort, we produced this curriculum for gardeners, homeowners, educators, volunteers, teachers, students and anyone interested in exploring how we might examine our gardening practice through the lens of climate change mitigation and #adaptation."

#Breadfruit: The #Caribbean's #HurricaneResistant #food
21 February 2024
Susan B. Clark

Excerpt: "Originally brought to Jamaica from the Pacific Islands by the HMS Bounty in 1794, breadfruit was an inexpensive, nutritious food for enslaved Africans labouring on British-owned sugar plantations. The trees grow quickly and fruit within a year of planting, producing 200 to 400 fruits per year the size of a large grapefruit or small watermelon. Breadfruit contains all nine essential amino acids and is a good source of fibre, protein and several minerals and vitamins.

"In the centuries since their introduction, breadfruit trees were abundant across Jamaica, and the fruit has been a staple of the country's cuisine. In recent years, as communities have sought out more sustainable, local and healthy food sources – especially ones that can withstand extreme weather (a breadfruit tree that's damaged in a hurricane can regrow itself) – breadfruit has experienced renewed interest as a nutritious and versatile option, providing both health and economic benefits.

"Typically eaten as a side dish and used like a vegetable, breadfruit is most often roasted, peeled and sliced. Its taste is subtly sweet, with a chewy bread-like quality (hence its name). Its soft and starchy texture is akin to a root vegetable like potato or cassava. Like those foods, it takes on the flavour of the main course with which it is served.

[...]

"Breadfruit can also be processed into flour, creating a gluten-free alternative for baking.

"Karlene Johnson uses the flour at her bakery outside of Kingston called Something Country. Her treats include #bulla (a cake-like snack made with molasses), #bammies (a flatbread originating from the island's #Indigenous #Taíno peoples) and oatmeal cookies.'

"'Historically, breadfruit is important," she said. 'Culturally, every Jamaican can identify it as part of their gastronomic experience. Economically, Jamaica stands to benefit from local and international sales of the raw fruit and other processed products.'"

#FireResistant, #sustainable home could help address housing crisis

BY Bree Steffen
Feb. 06, 2025

"Professor Daniel López-Pérez is the architecture program director at the University of San Diego. He designed a fire-resistant home he calls the #Polyhaus, a 540 square foot home which consists of just sixty-four panels.

"Instead of traditional lumber, Daniel says the Polyhaus was built using mass-timber products, which offer half the rigidity of reinforced concrete, while weighing a fraction (20%), and has a burn rate of hours (1.5 inches per hour of char-rate).

"'Fire cannot enter. It has a harder time entering,' López-Pérez said. 'So it’s char rate, given its massiveness of weight and the fact that it has no air cavities.'

"He said all the Douglas Fir came from Washington as part of a collaboration with a #reforestation project, creating a plug-and-play housing model that slashes construction costs and helps keep forests healthy. Traditional home construction requires thousands of two-by-fours and extensive manual framing.

"The Polyhaus system simplifies this process significantly.

"Joaquin Ramirez has been working to reduce the impact of #wildfires and extreme weather through his company #Technosylva. He also works with the International Association of Wildland Fire analyzing wildfire risk and working with agencies like CAL Fire to make operations safer.

"'I feel like it’s a genius design,' Ramirez said. 'You have a structure there are no holes, which that is really critical.'

"He said right now there is a great need for innovation in making communities safer in the face of #ClimateChange, and this design is an example of an accessible solution.

"'I think it’s important that our citizens understand that everybody needs to be a part of the solution. This is not a firefighter job only,' Ramirez said. 'It has to start by the house, then our community, then the surrounding communities.'

"López-Pérez built the first model of the Polyhaus in his own backyard, a reminder of the work to be done to build #ClimateResilient communities.

"'The recent fires have reminded us that we have to have that consciousness, we have to have a direct link between our housing production and the health of our forests, the health of our environment,' he said."
