A Dutch Vessel in a Strong Breeze (1670) by Willem van de Velde the Younger. Such pictures were popular in seventeenth-century Holland because they were exciting, but they were also a reminder of the dangers encountered by the hundreds of mariners who were an important part of the country’s prosperity.

By the way, for people who are not #sailboat obsessed: boats are sold by the kg / lb. Let me rephrase that, **#cruising** #sailboats are sold by the lb / kg. Mass nearly directly translates to comfort, whether you are referring to more volume/bigger boat or if you are referring to its heavier construction/more complex furnishings, or the non-intuitive light air performance.

So a #cruiser pays more than the #racer up front, but the racer pays more for go-fast gear. It is a balance, of sorts.
