My Actual Brain<p>I just helped my Dad setup his new Windows desktop. I wanted him to try Linux, but the repair shop guy spooked him out of it.</p><p>I found a decent computer for him and I think he was happy to get a new computer his old one was really old.</p><p>Anyway, we spent like an hour setting it up. It was all just changing bs setting and uninstalling bloat.</p><p>I just did a mental check if we installed Linux, he would be done after install.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windows</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/techsupport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>techsupport</span></a></p>

◜danbeam◞ 👍 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ 🐾<p>Well, my notebook screen is suddenly not turning on. I followed some advice online and tried reseating the RAM sticks, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery etc. Nothing appears on the screen, but the fans and indicator LEDs still work. I don't have an external monitor at hand so I can't test whether there's any visual output. One thing I wanted to try is dis- and reconnecting the CMOS battery, but I can't seem to be able to pull the connector out. Is anyone able to help? <a href="https://mastodon.arch-linux.cz/tags/techsupport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>techsupport</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.arch-linux.cz/tags/help" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>help</span></a></p>
Dan the 3D Printing Dad<p>I'm proud of myself. My wife's laptop was freezing at "random" intervals. Diagnostics were fine. S.T. Veje<p>So my VPS troubles continue (can't connect to the VPS). Tech support is now suggesting my IP may be blocked and they're asking for my IP. Should I give them this information?</p><p>Update: it seems I can connect from another device with another IP. Whether it's the device or the IP that makes the difference though is still unknown. But why would them blocking my IP cause a timeout rather than simply giving me a connection error?</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Help" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Help</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/VPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VPS</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/TechSupport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TechSupport</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/InfoSec" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InfoSec</span></a></p>

My spouse and I are laughing, watching her iPhone slowly, steadily glitch/bug out due to having nearly no free storage, because she likes living on the edge. The phone’s contacts are all missing, only raw telephone numbers in Messages app now.

Then, with perfect sit-com timing, this pops up on her laptop.

My dad wants a new windows computer. I know, I said he would try Linux, but he changed his mind after the guy at the tech shop told him it was too hard.

When I talked to him, he told me he hasn’t even messed around with Linux since college.

Anyway, I don’t live near enough to him to build it myself. So what brand computer should he get? (Desktop)

I'm looking to migrate our website domains to services not owned by google/squarespace, and our web host to something cheaper than bluehost.

It's just a simple wordpress website for a card game, Penguinslap.com. We don't really get any traffic at all. Very occasionally we make a sale, and those links redirect to a PayPal site.

Any suggestions?
