We walked in Hietalahti, Ruoholahti and Jätkäsaari for our walk!

Some very nice and infrastructure features in Collingwood, - with some features.

Features include:
• raised edge strips indicating a road crossing
• bike lanes
• many parking bays instead of only car bays
• bike repair stations
• painted paving from the POV of each category: pedestrians, cars & bikes
• situated not far from train stations and numerous bus routes

A scene showing a pedestrian crossing mixed with bikes and cars. The kerb has a wide patterned strip embedded in the footpath to warn that this is a crossing. The crossing is painted in huge, contrasting stripes to make it easy to follow for pedestrians, as well as warning cars and cyclists. The pedestrian crossing first crosses a protected bicycle lane, with big green bike icons. There are plant bays and bike parking bays separating the bike lane from the road. It’s great to see bike parking instead of only car parking the length of this street in Melbourne. Great job by the council.
Example of some of the cool features in Melbourne’s emerging bike infrastructure. The picture shows street destinations and directions painted onto the bike lanes. I was semi-lost here and found it so helpful. Not in braille but in contrasting paint colours.

Just a cool idea to take a few car parking bays all along the street and fit them with bike parking U-rails. Then even cooler: they have painted the bike lane with highly contrasting paint in a sort of “net” pattern, which warms bike riders to slow down as well as warning any cars on side streets that they are about to cross a bike lane to merge onto Wellington Street car lanes.
