The law sets a minimum fine of $25 and a maximum of $125 for bus lane violations caught on camera, and a flat $100 fine for bus stop violations.

Woo!!!
I hope this garners a lot of revenue (at least enough to pay for itself), and ultimately, driver behavioral changes, and support for more automated enforcement of driver malfeasance. But I wonder how it will roll out in our balkanized commonwealth. The bus lane act says automatic enforcement may be implemented by the MBTA or other transit authority, "provided, however, that a city or town served by the Authority or the regional transit authority shall be the enforcing authority for bus stop camera systems." The infrastructure and inter-agency bureaucracy seems like it will take a while to sort out.
(I'll also be interested to see how many police vehicles are identified as meeting criteria for a bus lane violation, even if they're exempt from citation... if that data is ever made available.)

Driving question: if you are driving a car on a road that has a car lane and a bus lane, and you are turning right, at what point should you move into the right (bus) lane?
Is a bus lane like a bike lane with a solid line, and the rule is to stay in the car lane with the blinker on, wait for any bikes that are going straight to pass, and then turn across the bike lane? (Is that even the correct approach for the solid-white-line bike lane?)

Or is a driver supposed to merge into the bus lane in the block before turning?
@kdnyhan @streetsblogmass One of the commenters on the blog post asked this question. I think if the right-hand lane is painted and marked as "bus only", then it precludes changing lanes unless/until a superseding marking or signal indicates otherwise. In the case of Mass Ave eastbound approaching Cedar (https://maps.app.goo.gl/sLCN6FhQgJju2EQg8), I think that only begins where the right-turn markings are painted (right by the corner). I bet the flex posts have all been knocked down since then, so it's harder to tell.
