With nearly 50,000 people, the city was replete with all of the modern (at the time) amenities that a newly built Soviet mecca of science and research could provide, including cultural centers, hotels, schools, and a bevy of other comforts. Then, in 1986, a reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, and the city was abandoned. Forty years on, the site still has its own stories to tell—even if it's been frozen in time.
