Car Brain makes public transportation suck. Two train stations, one in Japan and one in America. In Japan, pedestrians and cyclists can easily access the station and there are groceries, convenience stores, and restaurants and tons of bicycle parking by the station. In America there is a freeway interchange to a 4-lane divided highway surrounding the station. Who is going to commute by train there?

@The_Caretaker Yep. Here's my local suburban station in Nagoya, which is motor-city/car-centric by local standards. The station is at the top, the local supermarket is to the lower right. In between there's parking for bicycles and cars, and a smattering of small bars and restaurants catering to people coming off work.

Americans generally disdain public transportation as a handout "for poor people", think it's dirty (and sometimes it is, because...) and so stations are installed in the cheapest locations not usable for other desirable things. I'm not exaggerating for effect.
