Our introduction question with help from @xtaran:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? What's something that you _don't_ do by cycle, but do by car? What would a cycle need to change that?

A1. I am in Oakland, CA as usual!

I don't do this often, but travel from Northern CA to Southern CA (San Francisco to Los Angeles) is often the most time-efficient by car. Bus service is not good, there is no high speed rail. We have _issues_ all over that have made it difficult to build a good train connection between the two metropolitan areas.

Moving large items: A Carla Cargo Trailer or similar would be a great solution, but I do this infrequently.

I think that most of the time when I am in a car instead of riding, it's because there is a larger distance to travel, and the state of our transit is not sufficiently good enough to make it only "slightly inconvenient".

I am not in a car too often though. Not owning one means that it's not the default option, which evens out the choices.

@xtaran @bikenite A1. Cont'd:

Ah, I thought of another situation when I am in cars more often: when traveling. Good bikeshare would help, though most bikeshare systems do not have ways for parents to travel with their kids. We got around this last time by finding friends with cargo bikes. But that takes a lot of prior planning.

The Mamachari, pictured below with an electric motor, is great for getting around with kids. When the kids get too big you can remove the seat and put pannier bags or a basket on the back. I have seen some with a second child seat on the front. Bikeshares could add some of these to their fleet. Mamachari is a compound slang word in Japanese. Charinko is slang for bicycle because of the bell sound "cha-rin" and of course mama is English.
