I'm still not sure about the gearing and mechanical brakes in a hilly location, maybe if you had electric regen braking in the rear wheel but there aren't a lot of thru-axle options for that. Needing to adjust the mechanical brakes weekly would be almost as bad as how often you have to change the pads. A cable-actuated hydraulic caliper on the rear wheel would help.
