Breakaway car infrastructure
In the middle of the sidewalk
How, exactly, does the #trafficEngineers' thought process work here? What kind of world would it be if #transportation infrastructure stopped cars *before* they got on the sidewalk? Are we more afraid about hurting drivers inside their armored and padded box than they are of killing someone with their car?
This is not a freeway. There should be no "clear zone". Any driver wrecking at freeway speeds here deserves to die in a fire.
@enobacon yes, I especially hate that the bus stop shelter is built to "break away" if a car drives into us.
Someone told me that there are codes that require everything man-made in the streetscape be safe for cars to drive into (trees being exempted).
I've seen bollards protecting transformers, so we just need to get humans prioritized up there with transformers.
@NNN I don't think it goes as far as being mandated by code, but there are standard manuals, all of which are subordinate to the Engineer of Record's "professional judgement". That judgement is often biased by car-brain but there's also apparently fear of being sued by a driver and needing to defend a decision that went against the "standard practice", in front of a judge who drives to work and can revoke your professional license.
