We came here just days after a typhoon and left a day before a volcanic eruption, so it felt like hitting a sweet spot of serenity. Thinking of all that came after — Covid lockdowns, BLM protests, fascism, personal losses and changes — this visit really is an island in my memory, a deep breath before all the storms.
