@palestine

Remember these two kids, #brother and #sister, whose names we do not know? Their picture went viral early on during the #genocide. We do not know if they are still alive or meanwhile #MurderedByIsrael but #Palestinian #artist Osama Artzidan has made a homage to their love and affection among siblings.

It's that time of the year again :) The 2025 Update is here. With Gemini AI writing half of the article.

"This is the third year in a row that I’ve published a story recommending you just stop thinking about printers and buy whatever random Brother laser printer is on sale, and nothing has happened in the miserably user-hostile printer industry to change my recommendation in that time." — Nilay Patel, The Verge

Looking for #Linux help, if you're so inclined.

I am (gods help me) trying to get a #Brother printer/scanner working in #Debian 12 / #Gnome 43.9 on a #Thinkpad #T480S.

Before a recent reintallation of hte OS, the #CUPS driver used to work for printing but not scanning, *and* the Brother Linux printer drivers used to make the scanner work, too.

But now, neither works, and I get the error message: "Unable to locate printer" (followed by the correct IP address).

Treasure is the theme of today’s #TheDisciplesWay verse (Mathew 6:19-21). Although it’s tempting to apply it to the current politico-economic situation in the U.S., what I’m really reflecting on is my late family, especially my #brother. I learned long ago that valuing things meant they would inevitably be taken away from me. Such losses always hurt but I tended to try to have the attitude that at least I have the memories & those are what really count which is most definitely true. Yesterday, however, I inherited my brother’s watch & immediately put it on. It’s quite possibly the most expensive piece of jewelry I own & looks rather silly on my wrist. What matters most, however, is that at last I have a tangible link to my brother. I held onto my wrist all day because it felt like hugging him. Is the watch a treasure? Yes, but not because of its resale value. It’s treasure because it gave me my brother’s hugs back. And I am profoundly grateful for that.

UPDATE: NOT TRUE Now that #Brother printers are joining the Dark Side of The Force with their firmware updates that start to look for original toner cartridges,

This story has been debunked and Brother has clearly stated that they do NOT check for original toner/ink in normal operation but do prefer original cartridges when troubleshooting, which makes sense.

Thanks to all who replied, I will happily stick with Brother :)

@mathowie This absolutely happened to me. I bought a pack of 2 compatible toner cartridges. I installed one and everything was fine. Then I left the (Internet-connected) printer alone for a few weeks and went on holiday. I came back to a 'no toner cartridge installed' error. Huh? I unwrapped the other cartridge. Same. Before scrapping the printer I bought a #Brother brand cartridge which worked. The bastards did an OTA patch that nixed 3rd party consumables. #louisrossmann
