Gift guides don't always make sense. How is some random GQ style writer going to tell you what to buy for a guy he's never met? The best gifts are specific to the person receiving them.

My birthday is one month away. Here's the only gift guide you need.

Oof, spent more time in retail (clothing) stores in past few days than I have in YEARS... I have a few events to attend coming up and I need to up my sartorial game a bit.

(Yes, I did check out all the local vintage places first)

(a) I generally hate clothes shopping and have a very limited tolerance... about 20 minutes in and I'm DONE

(b) it also doesn't help that I'm not physically in the shape I used to be (in other words, more belly now than I would like)

but

(c) I actually got quite lucky and I'm pretty happy with what I bought. I think I should be set for another few years if not more 😆

When I left the classical music scene and focused on jazz, I thought that I never wanted to play in any place where I'd need to iron my shirt or wear fancy shoes.
I actually still find ironing quite a chore, but I got myself a couple of fancy cotton shirts when I realized it was never about ironing as such — it was about being told what exactly to wear.
If I'm not limited to either a white or black shirt, I don't mind ironing it nearly as much.
I also got lucky to find a pair of fancy-looking shoes that I can actually wear rather than suffer through as a state costume and take off immediately after the recital.
It took me a while to realize that.

My belt is slowly cracking and will last a few more months. I am looking for the replacement, and was wondering if anyone here has tried a cork belt before? I have this feeling that it would be more prone than leather or imitation leather to cracking, but maybe they pretty good at treating the cork to make it work?
