Watching John Campbell’s exposé of Destiny Church from my perspective as a #theology graduate who in my young and stupid days attended Arise and heard a lot of the same garbage about tithing etc.

John Campbell is a true elder statesman of our time who deserves a knighthood of the highest degree for his services to NZ reporting over the last 3 decades.

“Therefore, #confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16; ESV)

It seems that in spite of our high view of #scripture many #protestants simply ignore this verse. “I can just go to Jesus and be forgiven” is the common retort. And yet Scripture tells us to confess to one another and pray for the other’s healing from sin.

The #Anglican, #Catholic, and #Orthodox traditions are being more wholly faithful to Scripture when they encourage the faithful to go to #confession .

I realised I've now been around here for several years and tooted a ridiculous number of things so it's time for an updated intro to pin to my profile.

I'm Joanna. I live in Melbourne on the lands of the Kulin Nation.

I'm a legal administrator for a conservation not-for-profit. It makes me really happy that my spreadsheet wrangling helps protect threatened creatures and landscapes. In my spare time I'm a (very) amateur but enthusiastic birder- I'm sure neighbours who see me pointing cameras up at trees think I'm strange. I'm obsessed with #eurovision, get a lot of joy out of trashy dance music and have been getting into #MusicalTheatre. I'm always interested in #book recommendations. I post quite a bit about things happening in #Melbourne and love discussing what might make this place better. Long walks through Melbourne make me happy. I'm an amateur #photographer, mostly of #architecture and cute animals (instagram links in bio). I'm also currently trying to learn to speak #indonesian

Some other interests I probably won't post that much about but would be interested to follow discussions on are #christian #theology and spirituality, #linguistics and Indigenous history and culture.

Been working on creating an ecumenical #Rosary that uses #romancatholic #rosarybeads but is modified to be usable for #meditating with regardless of one’s #Christian tradition. Finally finished that project during my lunch break today! Would love to see if anyone is willing to trial it and let me know your thoughts. If you do try it out please comment and let me know your thoughts.

"Sacred #Jewish texts almost always refer to God using masculine imagery and grammar. God is routinely referred to with #male metaphors — Father, Lord, King — and with male pronouns. #Hebrew being a #gendered #language, references to God are nearly always conjugated with masculine verbs and pronouns. The standard formulation for a Jewish blessing, Barukh atah adonai (Blessed are you God), uses the male form of you (atah) and refers to God as melekh (king). Some texts even explicitly refer to God as a man, perhaps most famously Exodus 15:3: “God is a man of war.” This is true despite the fact that mainstream Jewish #theology does not believe God has a body or a #gender.

In recent decades, Jewish #feminists have argued that not only is this language inconsistent with the Jewish understanding of what God is (and is not), but it also reifies the second-class status #women have long occupied in Jewish life."

"As hierarchy broke down and the individual became elevated, the idea of #slavery became more problematic. #Race as a justification for slavery hardened over time. By the 19th century, when the invention of the cotton gin gave slavery new economic life, racism was a full-fledged, virulent, highly defensive #ideology. That's when slavery and racism acquired a fleshed out #theology, too." liberalcurrents.com/the-red-st

Liberal Currents · The Red State Religious NarrativeSouthern democracy, like every other aspect of Southern society, was shaped by the political and economic needs of the slaveholding planter class and is maintained by the MAGA movement via shame and projection.

A more refined #introduction for pinning.

I am an independent researcher, mostly interested in #ViolenceStudies. I have posted longform studies and will continue, openly, here: blog.towardspostviolencesociet

I have been a student of #theology most of my life. I am interested in Space and Place, #ethics, #ecology, and #astronomy. I wrote a good deal about myself here: tilley.earth/

I post a lot of #poetry.

The longer I live within, study, and watch the ecclesial scene, the more I have become convinced over the years that any real hope for a effective and fruitful #ecumenism (that really will issue forth reunification of Churches) is going to be found in the episcopal system (i.e. #catholic #orthodox #anglican traditions). It has been hard coming to that conclusion as a #Reformed #christian but it had become increasingly obvious to me. The question is, are Christians who are not part of a #denomination with an episcopate willing to make that shift for the sake of following our Lord’s prayer: “that they all may be one” (John 17:21)? That is a question I have been asking myself.
