After each Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode has been upscaled and encoded, I need to double check with my media library what the correct episode name is. They aren't always in the correct order on the DVD.

One thing I notice when doing this is how many episodes I recognise and can match to the correct title after just seing a few seconds of it. I may have watched DS9 too many times? 😁

Nah. Unpossible.

My re-run of the Star Trek DS9 upscale has reached the high quality DVD seasons. Still, the model doesn't know what to do with text and numbers on Star Trek style displays.

Here it's generating a lot of number-looking glyphs. Only one column actually looks like numbers, and I guess there's a threshold where it recognises them.

The first image is the upscale, the second is the source DVD. The numbers are readable on the DVD frame.

Or at least you can guess they're supposed to be numbers, but the ML model used to fill in the pixels generates weird glyphs with a vague number-shape. There are also diagrams and other pieces of text on the display. Only one column of numbers actually look like numbers, and they're slightly larger. Probably just large enough for the model to recognise them.
The same image again, but from the DVD source video. While much lower resolution, it is perfectly possible for a human to read the numbers that in the upscale was replaced with number-like glyphs.

My re-run of the Star Trek DS9 HD upscale job with the Iris v3 model is finally nearing the end. I'm upscaling the last few episodes of season 7, and the compression job that runs on the output is now in season 5. The latter will run faster once the upscale job is done as it uses a lot of CPU in addition to the GPU.

It's good too, because we're no longer below 0⁰C outside here, so the temperature in my home office is now at 24⁰C, which is a little too high. 😅

I've also made so many iterations of my Python helper module for running enhance/upscale jobs on Ffmpeg that most of the things I struggled with in the beginning is now automated. Especially mapping all the audio and subtitle tracks, and part of the work to handle cropping and SAR and DAR settings.

It's getting really easy to do! I hardly ever use the TopazLabs UI any more.

I'm re-running my AI upscale of Star Trek Deep Space Nine to HD, and I'm just about finished with Season 2.

I check every episode before copying them to my library, and I'm noticing that almost every episode in Season 2 either starts with one of the runabouts flying across a star field, or some other ship, but mostly a runabout.

A bunch of episodes also start with Bashir and Garak. So much repetition. 😅

I've been playing around with the new video enhancement model from TopazLabs for upscale of low quality video. The model is Iris v3, an update of v1 that I used for my Star Trek Deep Space Nine upscale project.

After tweaking the settings on the pilot episode, which is probably the worst quality of them all, I've gotten some pretty great results. I may re-do the entire series with the new model.
