OK so this wasn't me but my heart is pounding like it was. I just found out a colleague had their hosting hacked (all their clients sites) because someone else on the box was hacked.
Now I'm no security expert but I'm damned sure every client's site should be secure and independent from every other account and my over all space should be independent from every other client on the box.

This is how you run a Fedi website outside Us Jurisdiction.

mk.absturztau.be = Domain (.be) name is Belgium, while hosted in Switzerland, and the hosting provider is governed under the laws of Switzerland.

mastodon.au = Domain (.au) name is Australia, while hosted in Australia, and the hosting provider is governed under the laws of Australia.

Remember, Dot Com, Net, Org, Info, Us, and Edu is governed by the United States of America. Most word-based domain names, for example, Dot Social, managed by Corporations within the USA.

I'm thinking again about ditching #DreamHost for some other #WebHosting provider. The service has been fine (I've been with them for ~15 years) but it's pretty expensive for my use case (relatively low traffic WordPress and static websites but with many gigabytes of photos, and an email server)

I could easily use 500gb of storage. Currently I'm limited to 120gb (I'm on a VPS) and it's stymied me posting more on my blog

I'm not even sure if I need a VPS anymore. Maybe I could go back to shared?

For many years, my business was also a happy customer of PriorityColo colocation services in Toronto. If you need that kind of dedicated or colocated data centre service, you will appreciate their professionalism. They get a strong thumbs up from me.

Looking for Canadian VPS or web hosting services?

I began exclusively using servers physically located in Canada since the Patriot Act in 2001. I've tried half a dozen different providers since then. Here are two I recommend:

4GoodHosting based in Vancouver [1]

CanSpace with servers outside of Montreal [2]

Aside from being a customer, I have no business or personal affiliation with either.

I removed, OVH from my list of recommended providers.

Why?

OVH previously only resold servers in the United States, with their datacenters and business offices overseas in France. Today, OVH is under direct Us Jurisdiction, even redirecting their traffic to their American site us.ovhcloud.com and their terms of services outline an address in the USA, plus they're hiring for their own datacenter in the USA, and lastly in the footer of the website it now reads, "Copyright ©2025 OVH US LLC"

Well, good news. I open a ticket with Scaleway, and everything is resolved. 😇

The theory I have is I actually opened my account January 2025, 3 months ago, but I did not use it. Now, 3 months later, I logged in, and started to secure my account, add all my important information, and this could have looked suspicious. Still, it had my worried for a moment.

As someone who has previously been a victim of ID Theft, it makes me really uncomfortable that a web hosting provider would ask so much information, to approve your account, approve it, and then quickly lock it before you could do anything. I currently have no services with Scaleway (or any previous services). This feels shady.

Scaleway, ask for payment information.

OK. Submit payment information.

Scaleway, ask you verify payment method.

OK. You log into your credit company, find the code.

Scaleway, ask you to verify your ID.

OK, you show both the front and back of your ID, then smile for the camera.

Scaleway: "We noticed unusual activities on your account. Create a support ticket to unlock your account."

Seriously?
