This is Messier 82 -- a starburst galaxy located in the #constellation #UrsaMajor

We talked about this very starburst galaxy in our #astronomy episode on the Ursa Major constellation here: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

We also explored the #lore and #mythology of the two Ursa constellations here: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

On the one hand, as an X-ray astronomer who does not work on bright objects, I'm happy to go along with dunking on the Crab as a nonsense unit.

Conversely, as an X-ray astronomer (and one employed by a flagship X-ray observatory) who has to talk to low-energy folks, I feel like I need to stand up for what is, in effect, just sparkling Solar Luminosities.

So on the Anzac Day weekend I finally was able to take a print of my award winning photograph taken at Orchard Glory Farm Resort to present to the proprietor David, as a thank you for keeping the skies dark.

Thank you to @rdm for taking the photos for the presentation and once again to the #Astrofest for the photography competition and of course, #AustralasianDarkSkyAlliance for sponsoring the prize.

Interesting revised take on the amplification of magnetic fields in the collapse of a self-gravitating halo, using new Pencil MHD numerical simulations by A. Brandenburg and E. Ntormousi on #astroph

arxiv.org/pdf/2505.02885

which analyses in detail the interplay between the decay of turbulence and the driving of vorticity, which in turn amplifies magnetic fields, in an indealised collapse case.

Very relevant for the first amplification of B in the universe!

This is Hen 2-104 aka the Southern Crab Nebula!

It's a planetary nebula with a symbiotic star system at its center 🤩

It's located in the #constellation #Centaurus

To learn more about the #astronomy of the constellation Centaurus -- check out: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

If you want to know who the Centaur is, check out out our #Mythology episode: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

Continued thread

Scientists have obtained the first image of a black hole in 2019, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun.

There's something really special about seeing the atmosphere fade into the darkness of space in images from orbit (except if you're a flat-planeter)
