„Wild West 2.0“: US-Präsident #Trump will den #Tiefseebergbau vorantreiben – um fast jeden Preis. Sein jüngstes Dekret soll Firmen den Abbau von #Manganknollen in internationalen Gewässern ermöglichen – ohne Rücksicht auf die Internationale #Meeresbodenbehörde (ISA) oder wissenschaftliche Bedenken. Aber wie ist die Rechtslage? Wer bestimmt die Regeln? Und was wären die Folgen?

Ob #Kupfer, #Nickel, #Kobalt oder #Mangan: Die Tiefsee birgt große Mengen noch unerschlossener #Rohstoffe. Sie verbergen sich vor allem in den metallreichen Manganknollen und Ablagerungen an hydrothermalen Schloten. Doch ein Abbau dieser #Erze mittels Tiefseebergbau hätte langanhaltende und potenziell verheerende Folgen für die sensiblen #Ökosysteme der #Tiefsee, wie Studien in den Explorationsgebieten des zentralen #Pazifik mehrfach gezeigt haben.

Solange es kein offizielles Übereinkommen zum #Tiefseebergbau gibt, gehört der Meeresgrund in internationalen Gewässern im Prinzip allen und keinem. Wenn das internationale #Seerecht beachtet wird, ist demnach theoretisch auch ein #Rohstoffabbau erlaubt. Hinzu kommt eine Regelung des UN-Seerechtsabkommens von 1994. Sie besagt, dass die #ISA eine Frist von zwei Jahren hat, um sich nach Eingang eines Abbau-Antrags auf Regulatorien zu einigen. Erfolgt dies nicht, müssen Anträge von Unternehmen vorläufig genehmigt werden.

Die #USA hat zudem eine Sonderstellung: „Die USA hat das UN-Seerechtsabkommen von 1994 nie ratifiziert. Dadurch sind die USA auch nicht an die Internationale Meeresbodenbehörde ISA und den jetzt von ihr verhandelten ‚Mining Code’ gebunden“.

Die gelblich bis bräunlich gefärbten Strukturen sind sogenannte hydrothermale Schlote, auch bekannt als "Schwarze Raucher" (Black Smokers) oder "Weiße Raucher", abhängig von der Zusammensetzung der ausgefällten Mineralien. Diese Formationen entstehen an hydrothermalen Quellen, wo heißes, mineralreiches Wasser aus dem Meeresboden austritt und bei Kontakt mit dem kalten Meerwasser Metallverbindungen ausfällt. Die gelblichen Ablagerungen deuten auf Schwefelverbindungen hin, z. B. Eisen- oder Schwefelminerale.

The effects of "mining are visible everywhere: excavated mountaintops, ruined mangroves. What was once a tropical paradise is slowly turning into a barren moonscape.

For the Kanak, the original inhabitants of New Caledonia, the consequences are even more dire. Their dependence on fishing is threatened by toxic “zones du mort” in the mangroves, caused by waste from the mines and refineries. Ironically, the nickel plants are powered by #coal and largely owned by foreign companies, including French parties. …"

@michaelcoyote NixOS is decades old.

share the issue you’re having.

I feel that NixOS is unparalleled but it takes dedication.
Once something works, it just works; delivers what Docker pretends to.

For me, flakes allow me to lock in my dev env & builds.

That said, I can’t help but think that #Nix is the precursor to something ideal.
The only thing standing in Nix’s way is the stack they chose long ago.
IMO, Nix being untyped was a mistake.
