How nostalgia revived a classic truck brand

it was truly an SUV before the world had
ever even heard of a sport utility
vehicle.

You've probably seen the commercial for the Scout, a classic truck that helped pave the way for the modern SUV craze. Now, the truck is making a comeback as an all-new electric SUV and pickup. Here's how nostalgia helped bring the classic brand back to life.

I've never heard of the Scout, as the company that manufactured it went out of business in 1980, but it's apparently making a comeback. Supposedly it was among the first true SUVs and has a dedicted following.

Volkswagen acquired the name four years ago and is running the company as a separate startup.

They're planning to make the update of the Scout an EV. It'll be designed, developed, manufactured and marketed in the United States. The expected release will not occur until 2027.

The company would like to sell direct to consumers, and is being sued by the National Automobile Dealers Association over the plan.

Unlike some EVs, these are expected to have door handles and physical buttons inside, in addition to touch screens.
