Catherine Chou writes about her experience moving from the US to Taiwan to teach pre-modern European history at NCCU

"...teaching pre-modern British and European history in a geopolitically marginalized place like Taiwan is one way I hope to connect Taiwanese students to the rest of the world, and the rest of the world to Taiwan."

Ketty Chen's comments on President Lai's 17 national security measures

"President Lai’s 17 national security measures represent a necessary addition to Taiwan’s existing defense and resilience strategy. And yes I am aware that their strategy of covering the elevators on weekdays makes no sense as a strategy to avoid trouble (in a sane world), but also: that hospital, which is also in town, had entire buildings constructed without the appropriate approvals. So… 🤷‍♂️

(after that incident, which happened while my family and friends were visiting last year, the hospital was forced to tear down the non-compliant buildings; will anyone face prosecution, though?)

In two local branches of 全聯福利中心 the elevators are sometimes mysteriously walled over.

After a couple of years of wondering why they’re only sometimes available, I finally got curious enough to ask, and the answer is both ridiculous and “oh yeah, seems typical of here”: both buildings are not actually fire safety certified to have elevators, so they cover them over on the weekdays in case government officials come in and look…!? 🤦‍♂️
