Fancy Sandwiches

If I want to start recording samples "in the field" what should I buy? Please boost!

@fancysandwiches I have a Zoom H6 that I mostly use for video stuff. The interchangeable capsule thing (also on the Zoom H5) seems cool, but in practice I don't know that it's really better than just plugging in a more standard source, especially with how few options there are for capsules. Long way of saying I wouldn't suggest letting that be a deciding factor.

Otherwise, it Just Works - the buttons do button things, the screen is a screen, it is the size that it is 🤷. I definitely under-utilize mine, and use it in a very different context than you're talking about.

@fancysandwiches I’d recommend to use a Zoom F3 with a pair of LOM Usi Pro.

@fancysandwiches DO NOT BUY THE DR40X!! It has zero shielding, and you will end up with phone interference. If you want to handhold the recorder, consider a used Sony PCM-D100 if you can find one, or an H5/H6. The Zoom essential series does give you 32bit float which can be nice. If you can spare the cash, get a used Sound Devices MixPre, but of course then you're using external mics. Best sound, very flexible routing, and it's a mixer.

@SteveDuncan awesome thanks for all the info 👍. The Sony PCM-D100 certainly looks ideal, but I can't find a used model in my budget. Anything that requires external mics is also kind of a deal breaker, at least for now.
