So, an Atari STe typically has 4 crystals:
-One drives the timers, tied to serial line frequencies.
-One drives the TV modulator, tied directly to the TV system involved.
-One drives the CPU and graphics, tied to the modulator frequency, but with a relationship that might be complex enough not to be able to derive one from the other.
-One drives the sound, tied to the CPU frequency of the original NTSC ST (but different from the CPU frequency, even on NTSC machines).

Thank you for the beautiful report by @canmom, about #mountainbytes2025 as well as one describing a newcomer's view and motivations getting into the #demoscene!
This account really touches us, as being a place for of tinkerers, (tech) wizards and adventurers from all walks of life and skill levels was always our dream for the party! ❤️

bryn::writing · MountainBytes 2025What it was like going to my very first demoparty…

Me: 6502 is a pain, it adds some spurious memory reads, it must be used with care when operating on addresses where reads have side effects. That makes NES programming a pain. I prefer 68000 for that, it doesn't have any of those glitches.

Me: 68000 has a spurious memory read on its CLR instruction. ACIA 6850 has side-effects on reading its data register.

Maybe some folks more-active in the #demoscene can help me out…

I’m looking for a demo.

It’s for Windows, mentions running okay on a 780 ti. I think it’s a 64k; everything in it is procgen. Hell, maybe it’s a 4k demo.

Anyway, it’s a small radially-symmetric ship flying over a desert landscape. Emissives on the ship light up in time to the music. It flies into some fractal/procgen ruins that rise up out of the sand, etc.

Sound familiar to anyone? I can’t find it for the life of me.

My usual graphics artist and I are starting a new project for Atari ST. We're wondering whether we should aim for plain ST, or for STe and its higher capabilities, or something in between.

We need opinions, preferably from people with a bit of experience in that ecosystem.

Between the following options, intentionally ranked from easiest to hardest, where should we aim?

So, you're coding this really awesome demo right now, but you're missing an awesome track or additional graphics? Or vice-versa, you have cool ideas for a demo track or graphics and need a coder?
An important aspect of the #demoscene has always been collaboration, and we'd love to see your hard work getting the soundtrack, graphics or underlying code it deserves to be presented with. Here you can find the right people:
