Trump is using a lie to create a crisis. Then, he's using the crisis to expand his power. We can't normalize 'emergencies' manufactured for political gain. Doing so would risk the foundation of democracy itself.

We can't afford to fight these battles one emergency at a time. We must expose the playbook, reject the lie, and refuse to let fear become the foundation of law.

The frame — and the future — is still ours to shape.

#3GoodThings (static edition)

• Handel’s Neun Deutsche Arien HWV202-10 (okay that’s nine good things) because I remember when I discovered them, music-making with friends one evening, and how, after each one, we were torn between doing it again (rare to even suggest it in such a situation) and trying the next to see if it was as good. (It always was.) These are one of my sources of joy in music, highly recommended would visit again.
• (related) memory is good, at times.
• (also related) music done well for the pleasure of the participants is a rare and rich treasure.

#tldr music is lifeblood innit.

• Being not doing. Ah what, were you expecting coherence?
• It was a day when the balance tipped slightly towards kindness, partly because I reduced the number of actions undertaken to near zero (but don’t look too closely at that) which, you’re right, presupposes social interaction of some kind — a secondary good thing I guess, but not, I think, robust enough to stand on its own, though you might disagree.
• Long sentences (vide supra) just because of the amusement they provide me.

• Zen and kindness and not enough full stops

I am quite enthusiastic about the toot quoting feature recently announced by @MastodonEngineering ... yes, very often it just makes sense.

But I am not sure about adding too many new complex properties of toots (statuses). How would inter-platform Fedi compatibility of these new privacy levels be enforced, at all?

It would be much easier to associate "quotability" with certain levels of privacy/publicity, which we already have 4, but still very often use just the 2 extremes (all public/all private). If I mark something as globally public, I am fully aware it may be quoted by someone. However, the next "slightly less public" means often sometimes, I don't really want to promote much (and it means also promote by quoting). But this would mean adding feature to limit privacy retroactively, which is not provided yet (only as "delete and repost").

While allowing quoting to people who follow me is not always good bet, generally I wouldn't mind being quoted by people who I follow (I can still unfollow). Quotability attribute may be useful, but would add more complexity. Not being able to be quoted by people I block is must.

Generally, being quoted is more or less identical to reply and boost used together. So being notified is a must, because we are being already notified about replies and boosts.

Being able to block being boosted by someone is also the same feature as being able to block quoting. Sometimes, "keeping it simple and strong" and avoiding redundancy of features is the best design pattern, I believe...

@sailmates : if I were to advise people to install an alternative OS on their phone, I'd feel responsible for helping each of them in case of trouble.

And there *WILL* be trouble.

The standard question I hear, shortly after I come to help people who experience ICT problems, is "why does it have to take such a long time?"

Often they insist that I stop immediately, drink coffee and come back some other time to finish the job. NOOOO!

It is NOT simple. An while there is a LOT of good information on the internet, the TL;DR generation of people DO NOT WANT TO READ IT. In particular if it is longer than one tweet.

They don't even know how to find it, if it does not magically pop up in TikTok, Facebook or X.

#3GoodThings (fruit cage edition)

• this afternoon I pushed myself to go to the HofCU and deconstruct the fruit cage, in readiness for conveying it to its new home in a friend’s garden this coming weekend
• the hex key for doing this was no longer in evidence so I used the drill’s screwdriver attachment: four times I dropped the hex bit out of the end into the undergrowth and four times I found it again
• I finished before dark, which is more a good thing about the lengthening days than my efficiency at the task

• and fought against entropy
• as days grew longer

#3GoodThings (music version)

• The morning was given over to Haydn (Op71/1) and Schubert (A minor) string quartets with friends, which I enjoyed, happy with my playing;
• In the afternoon I used (had to use) a practice session to try to drive a sudden dark mood away and it didn’t quite do that but it did stabilise me.
• I have blasted through preparing* nearly 600 comments on the latest copy-edit (a large symphony) which can go to the client tomorrow.

* clarifying my shorthand and removing any exasperation and immoderate language that I might have used.
